Yup . And to whoever said resistance in the pedal after going mechanical wasnt normal, HAHAHAHA . Actually, Ill admit that mine got a lot easier after I put some atf down the carb one morning in a desperate attempt to start my car (problem since solved ). Ever since then, they have moved much easier, lol.

PS - This is how most people do the mechanical secondaries: http://slegers.com/sites/sean/mechsec.htm

just wanted to add... i lookeds inbetween the cat and its heat shielding and sa that it is indeed glowing red. as i surmised earlier, the loose air pump belt probably enabled the cat to get clogged pretty bad. so ill be having a bit of straight-pipe welded in there.

ok, that last post was supposed to be me, but since i am at Error402's computer i accidentally posted under his name. oops

i meant to ask, do you think the extra restrictive exhaust caused by the clogged cat could cause the vacum secondaries to not open? i ask because the stock setup provides much greater driveability than the way we have it rigged right now. this car is my daily driver for now, and im not interested in power-mods.
(thats what my two 2nd gen ghetto racers are for )

if so i can easily undo the changes we have made after i get the cat problem fixed.

also... part of the mod was to remove a switch from the front of the carb. looks kinda like the throttle position sensor on my 2nd gens, but since this is carbed i couldnt figure out why it would have one. hmm... unless it is controlling emmisions equipment. how exactly do the secondaries get their vacum signal? is it an internal circuit in the carb or is there some vacum lines running around perhaps to a solenoid? i could see perhaps this switch activating a vacum solenoid at a certain throttle position so that the secondaries would only open under moderate to heavy throttle. if i am totally crazy please let me know, cause i couldnt find anything in the haynes manual about this.

i couldnt think of any reason why the cat would glow other than it being clogged. i think i have heard of manifolds glowing from too much unburned fuel or something, but this cat is midway down the exhaust pipe, and i would think that something closer to the exhaust port would get hotter first. thanks

if the coils were switched, that would definately cause a lack of power. i think the lead coils supplies like 85% of the power or something like that. that wouldnt explain the turns tho.

and i agree with WankelGuy..... if your trailing plugs werent firing, you would barely feel a difference (especially street driving). the trail plugs are just there to sort of get what the leads missed (more or less)... right?

about the clogged cat... if it were clogged it would definately rob horsepower and after a while it will build so and all of the sudden un-clog itself and shoot a puff of smoke out the exhaust (its happened to me in a qualifying session). however if the cat was clogged, the car would be noticably quieter (if you have a loud aftermarket exhst on). so i dont know.

OH, WHAT??? THE PROBLEM IS ALREADY SOLVED?? lol. you damn people always get to these threads before i do!

?? Did going mechanical solve ALL problems? If not you may still have a carb problem. If the jet on one side were blocked, you would be running on half a motor. Going mechanical would allow gas in from the secondaries,,,,and mask the fact that it was not comming from the primary.
Timming light should determine if coils / wiring / timming is correct. I have seen poor start and run problems when the LEADING system was bad, usually ignitor. Sometimes intermittent and when it goes from bad to good, feels like an afterburner kicks in.
If the secondary goes bad, you usually can't tell,,,except the tach doesn't work.
If timming is off, or switched,, CAT may overheat.

well i think the carb may be a little out of tune as well, since it doesnt like to hold idle very well, but yesterday it was a lot warmer than it has been recently, and it idled just fine till at night when it got colder.

ive also got something thats draining the battery overnight. doh! electrical problems suck.

today i am cutting the cat off. (unless i find a really easy way to unbolt it)

i also have to change the head gasket on my 240sx.
what a pain thats going to be. it took me forever to get the head off, hopefully now that i know where everything goes, putting it back together will be easier.
