Just bought my 1st Rx-7! Question...

Hey, I just bought my first Rx-7!!!

It's a '83 and I think it's a GSL. Been sitting for about 3 years, but is in okay shape and even still has the owner's manual. However, It will need a little work and some TLC to get it back on the road.

The car has a factory sunroof, rear defrost, power mirrors, manual windows no cruise, digital clock, a/c, and a drum rear...is this a GSL or a GS? I thought the only cars w/ sunroofs were GSL and GSL-SE...am I right or wrong?

Thanks,
Tim

se's were only 84-85. i believe the gs could still have a sunroof. the best test is to see if it has the lsd. jack up the rearend and spin the tire. if the other rotataes the same way, its lsd and gsl. other then that i have no idea.

manual windows and rear drum? I'm thinking GS. My '83 GSL had power windows and rear discs

If you have drums in the rear it's a GS unless they were swapped, but that is highly unlikely considering disc is way better then drum any day of the weak. Welcome to the rotary community!!!!

gsl = lsd, and disk brakes (no gsl's with drum brakes at anytime were made)
gs = drum brakes and no lsd.

sunroof in 83 could either be there or not (ive seen gs's with em and gsls without em

so you have a gs.....

Found out it's actually an '84 (seller didn't know what he had) and I'm with you guys on it being a GS. It does not have lsd or rear disc. My brother-in-law and I actually got the car started today (less than 1hr of having it home). Car runs okay all things considered and everything seems to work. It needs a fuel pump and a tune up and that may be it. We already changed the fluids. Here's a quick list of what the car needs:

1. Fuel pump
2. Spark plugs
3. Fuel filter
4. Carb rebuild kit
5. Replace some rubber lines
6. Minor body work (rear bumper, tailight)

What else would you guys recommend that I replace since the car has been sitting? Also, when I got in the car I pressed lightly on the clutch and the pedal fell to the floor and hasn't come back up. I still have to change the fluid in that, but what else could be wrong? Master cylinder for the clutch maybe?

I'll try to get pictures up this weekend although the car isn't that pretty. Some of you might get jealous if you knew how much I paid for it - I know my brother-in-law is. I had to stop working on the car so I could go to work and make some money - the whole time I was there the car was calling my name.

Yup, sounds like the clutch hydraulics to me. Could be a bad master or the slave cylinder. It's worth a try to change the fluid but my gut says it's more than that.

You should do a search on the forum for "ATF treatment". That's something you should defintely consider doing. 'cept don't use ATF, use MMO.

Good luck with your new ride!!!

There is a clear difference between the 83 and older, and the 84 and newer. The interior alone would be an obvious indicator. There are many other little things to show you as well.

BTW, definately sounds like a GS with a sunroof.

This is an 84/85 Leather interior - Note the dash.

1980 Interior (81-83 is VERY similar)

then it is definetly an '84 since the dash looks the same minus the EQ.

Thanks,
Tim
