Just bought a 1982 GSL; any 101 advice?

Just bought a 1982 GSL; any 101 advice?

Just purchased near perfect '82 GSL -- Grey with red leather interior. Just an amazing find in Colorado (I am in Austin).

It has 60K on odometer, but was the tow-behind car for the one-owner RV'er so mileage on engine is likely half that or less.

Bought it on a lark (got stupid one night on the Bring-a-Trailer auction site, bid figuring someone would outbid me, but no one did, so "boom" I had an RX-7), but turned out to be a great addition to my collection: 73 911T, 73 'Vette, 1986 944 and a bunch of other less interesting "stuff".

Anyhow, I know zero about the Mazda Wankel, other than I am amazed at how compact it is, and its power curve (nothing like a rotating ICE).

For example, I know that it consumes oil -- just like the boxer/pancake 6 in my Porsche.

I have a Haynes manual on-the-way, but any 101s would be appreciated.

I saw that one going for sale on BT back then. Did you drive it down or tow it?

Flyin Miata are good folks. Probably not a lot you have to do immediately.

I agree. Nothing major you will need to do with 60K, especially if your guess is that maybe half of the 60K is in tow behind status.

I have the same interior/exterior color car in an 81, no rust, and I performed only general maintenance on it up until nearly 100K. Only thing that may be off a bit is the steering box. If not, you are surely golden.

If the body is in as good a condition as it sounds like your engine is, you have a great start to ownership.

No, it injects the oil (or rather droobles it into the carburetor) from the pressurized oil feed, via two little opaque tubes.

This is to lubricate the apex seals in the engine. The seals (unlike piston rings) never see a sump or an area that contains oil. And like every metal on metal part in an engine it needs to be lubricated. So the simple fix is to toss some oil into the combustion chamber. The OMP (oil metering pump) is the device that does this pretty well; as long as the rubber isn't aged and/or clogged.

Yep, that's the car that cost me two nights on the couch when no one outbid me :-(

Shipped it. Set max of $500, took a month for someone to accept it.

Very happy with it so far.

Rules to live by for a rotary:

1. Never, ever let it overheat.
2. Always check the oil.
3. Redline it at least once on every drive.

Other than that, normal maintenance. Now for your car it may or may not need all the rubber replaced due to it coming from a reputable shop. Normally at this age any rubber needs to be replaced. New shocks and brakes. All fluids. The usual stiff for older cars.

All that is renewal stuff -- oil, brakes, etc -- is already in progress.

Only "rubber" that need replacing are the door seals, and already have them in hand.

Only other "cosmetic" issues are the inside door handle cups, which have deteriorated and need to be replaced -- found black ones, red one are NLA -- and a cracked dash (also red). Any thoughts on the dash would be appreciated.
