Exclamation I've tried EVERYTHING - Spuddering & Loose ALL power at certain RPMS

Okay, I removed my rats nest, had HUGE spuddering problems, then i found a gaint vac leak beside the tranny behind the carb, and now the exhuast is 10x more quite, it idles at 1100 RPM, BUT when i give it total open throttle and try to goto 8000 rpm in first, right when it hits 7000 it stays there and locks up and starts to loose ALOT of power, never did this befor, and i keep very good care of my care, change oil every 1000 miles, and allways use a full can of marvel myster oil. Also if i shift after going to 7k and it locks up there, when i hit 5000 in second it chokes up and wants to loose LOTS of power and stay at 5k. I cant figure out why, there are NO vac leaks, ive used tons of carb spray checking each line and they are all sealed. just at idle with not in gear i can rev to 8k with no problems. I also wanted to add that now when im idling, lemme explain how it idles

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm (soft pop pop pop) mmmmm (soft pop pop pop) mmm(soft pop pop pop)mmmm(soft pop pop pop)mmmmmmm(soft pop pop pop)mmmmmmm(soft pop pop pop)mmmm

lol thats the only way i can explain.

Thanks so much to anyone who can help me! Im going crazy over here!

HEH and another thing i forgot was when im idle my oil pressure goes down to near "0". Ive got lots of friends in 1st gens and they do too but it cant be good i'd think..

1st gear at 7000k it locks up like it wants to die and loose power
2nd gear locks up at 5-5500 k and wants to die or loose power

idling it does the
"mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm (soft pop pop pop) mmmmm (soft pop pop pop) mmm(soft pop pop pop)mmmm(soft pop pop pop)mmmmmmm(soft pop pop pop)mmmmmmm(soft pop pop pop)mmmm"

99k miles, never driven real hard, straight pipe with rb headers.

SOrry for long post, and thanks!

just a hunch maybe the exhaust needs a little back pressure since it sounds like your running striaght pipe? Maybe a presilencer would do the trick?

Float levels ok? Also, with the occassional sputtering at idle, maybe you have an ignition problem. Check your plug wires, cap/rotor, high tension wires, etc. Run the engine in the dark, and you may be able to see sparks leaking out somewhere. Good luck.

Check your distributor

If it ain't the fuel filter (and I would still check it cause all it really takes is a tank of bad gas to plug it good) then check your ignition 9 times outa 10, + every 7th time it will be 10 outa 10 its an ignition problem weak pick ups dirty cap, leaking wires, bad vacume advance, etc, etc etc. even sporadic problems can be casued by the ignition coils that don't work well when they get hot, pickups that do the same, the list is endless.

do a full check on your ignition (after you check you fuel filter again) and get back to us with findings.

kenn

did you hook your vacumm advance back up??????? (and I am not being sarcastic)
