79-80 shifter unique (as is transmission underneath , so only option is to cut down existing shaft then re-thread for **** - was a popular mod when the car was new apparently
Fuel sender part number different (again, so is actual tank too) from 79-80s vs later RX7s - so it suggests these would not interchange...

the shifter is what makes the SA cool!

the fuel sender, electrically works the same 79-85, so you might be able to take your old one and a new one, and get it to work

If you want a short THROW shifter on an SA tranny, if you can find a 5 speed shifter from a '76-'78 ribcase trans, it will fit and shift correctly. All you'd need to do is shorten it to the SA length and rethread to oh let's say 12mm x 1.5 (or 1.25 whatever) like the '81-'85 *****. The throws will feel a lot shorter but the length will still look correct for the car.

I plan to do exactly this shifter swap on an SA tranny for the GLC before the new engine goes in.

so, does that miata shifter work for an 85?, cuz the only short throw for an 85 i've seen on ebay it's like 150 bucks.

I don't know. If I was going to do a short shifter on an FB tranny, which I doubt I'd do since it's already pretty short, I'd probably get the Mazdatrix one since it is a complete kit and truely offers short throws due to the lengthened distance between the large pivot ball and the small ball, kinda like the early ribcase shifters have.

I don't know what the Miata shifters look like, or the specs on lengths, diameters etc.

Have you removed yours and tested it per the factory service manual to see if it is your problem?

As far as where to get a new one for your year.

Don't know of any place that sells new ones for your year, best thing to do if you have tested, cleaned and determined that yours is bad. Is to post a WTB threadin the parts section.
