intake questions
Hey i have a 1985 GSL SE, and right now i just have the aircleaner in the airbox their, i found a little rubber fitting piece in a box of parts i got when i bought the car, this is the rubber fitting that conects to the little slot in the front of the hood right by the airbox. Wondering it is a good idea to hook this piece up instead of just having the box with the slot in it open? Also wondering if it is that beneficial for HP and worth the money to get rid of the box and just go with a cone filter and im not sure what to use for the rest? Any help would be nice, thanks guys.
It's called a cold air box. changing to a cone filter, placed in the engine bay, draws warmer air into the intake, =less hp. Free-er flowing intake, =more hp. Add the cold air box to get the best of both.

Just a quick tip to help you in the right direction; run a quick search on "LongDuck" and "Cold Air Ram Intake" and you should see some threads outlining exactly what you can do with the SE airbox to get cold air coming in, plus some ram effect through the Mariah headlight NACA duct.
Hope this helps, and sorry I can't provide a directly link - it was awhile a go.

thx for the recomended search LongDuck, really helped, although the pics of your set up were not view able for me. Just wondering before i end up changing anything to do with my air intake, would it be better to hook the rubber piece that conects to the front that leads the air into the box or just leave the box with an open slot?
Until you decide what to do in the long term (cone filter, etc.) I would hook up that rubber elbow from the airbox to the radiator shroud, if only to seal off the shroud. The radiator and oil cooler are surrounded by this shroud to build up and use any air pressure at the front of the car to aid in cooling - if you give the air a hole to go through, it will release this pressure and decrease your cooling capacity. Maybe not by much, but it does release that 'bubble' built up in there. You'll notice on my installation that I did cut a piece of kydex plastic to cover the exposed hole that used to feed air into the rubber elbow. HTH,
Here's a pic of my intake (reposted to tinypic):

Putting the lights up (on) is my anti-rain 'feature'. Seriously, I have run this intake in some pretty heavy rain and found that it will not draw in excessive water, but I also find that when it's raining like that, enough that I have to turn on my wipers, then I usually turn the lights on for better visibility, anyway.
At night, and in the rain, you don't have as much benefit from CAI intake anyway, since the air is usually already cooler, or saturated with water vapor which drastically reduces performance.
Remember, I live in the AZ desert, so dropping daytime air temps even 10 degrees makes a huge difference in throttle response.
