installing new doors, should I shave the handles and locks.

my doors have the only rust on my entire car. but its really bad, so I bought a set from a guy on this forum. I have to smooth and paint the doors anyways sooo...

Here is my idea, shave the handles and locks off both sides, and shave the mirror off the passenger side (legal in minnesota) that along with no bumper strips would really clean up the car. with romote controlers

what do you think.

my only thought is this (as I planned on this eventually as well):

How are you going to devise it so that when (if) your battery dies, you can open your doors?

I planned on having a hidden switch on the car that would activate the actuators just like the remote would, and also since the battery is under the hood you cant open without opening the door(s), maybe putting some custom "jumper teminals" on the car somewhere, so that when I need to get into the car and the battery is dead, I can hook up jumper cables to the jumper terminals and open the door using either the button (if the remote is lost too) or the remote. These "juper terminals" would be nothing more than say two battery terminal looking things on the car somewhere for the jumper cables to hook onto...If that makes sense.

Have a spare battery tucked up under your car somewhere and a little screwdriver on your keyring. I tihnk that should suffice.

Shave the locks, leave the handles...how else are you going to close your doors unless you dirty the window constantly or leave butt marks?

i did this on a street rod. make sure ot use some good quality poppers and if you read up you can find the right models. I am gonna do this this winter. and defintly do put remote jumper set up on it. Think of the pain in the *** to crawl through the hatch. if you need any tips let me know.

Gotta get some nice old-skool prelude door handles, the ones with the side-pulling handle, and the chrome-plating That's what I'd do....

That's my rice-racer, by the way

what about passing tech at the track? I know for autocross and track days, you need to have a functioning door handle.... Don't know about drag racing though...

i dont race my rx7 competively on the track, I have my spec ford for that. I do bring it to brainerd for these Donnybrook exibition events though, I dont think they care about **** like that, to pass tech you cant have any loose items in the car, and no floormats.

Naw, don't do it.

I remember when I had my VW bug. The big craze back then was the "Cal" look VW, lowered to the weeds, neon colors, shaved handles for doors and trunk, removed trim, less functional at the sacrifice of "looking good"

Basically I hated that style. I think its really dumb to make a car less functional for a stylish reason. That is, unless you don't actually drive the car, and only trailer it to car shows....

its easier for me to hit a button and have the door pop open then to have to insert and turn akey and then pull on a handle.

not that, im lazy like that, just answering your question

and, the locks on our cars make it easy to be broken into..... That would be one ore trick thing on the list, and one more security relief..

I have seen a picture on this forum, where there is a old ford coupe (I think) with posts under the car at the back.... for jump starts, external accesory's.. but I think it was to keep the batery alive when storing the car... Like leave a charger on it...... Well, you might want to look into them....

Thanx, Laterz, Andrew

I'd only shave the locks. Didn't someone photochop pictures of what it would look like a long time ago? Can't remember who.

you should shave the handles and locks and weld up the door seams. instead of a door popper, get something that rolls the windows down. then you can get in it dukes of hazzard style. and it will look like most of the car is one body panel.

good point! but i think that a perfectly shaven door does look great...what color are you goin for. my friend has a box mustang that he shaved everything off of...doorhandles, locks, logos, all of it and painted it silver with blue flames....it look great.

Ok, well I dont know if anyone has before, but I Photochopped the locks off a few pics of cars that Ive collected from here and there. Anyway, just so you can get an idea of what it would look like . I also did one without a handle too...

~T.J.

PS - I think It looks pretty good .
