installing front wheel bearing races

Is there a good way of getting them in without ruining them or should i just go to a machine shop?

I just use a socket of the same size and drive them in. You can go to sears or parts stores and get the correct tool.

I have used the old ones as a buffer to drive the new ones in, then drive the old one back out.

When the thicker end goes in 1st, orient the old one the same way. After the new one is set, drive the old one out with a brass drift.

I think I got it backwards. I was thinking I invert the old one so the wide edges line up, then tap the old one on the back so it pushes the new one down. You're saying fit them together in the same orientation, then tap? Wouldn't that ruin the race surface? Am I missing something?

Ok, had to go out to the shop and take a spare apart to be sure. T

The races for both the inner and outer bearing install thick end first. Start the new race and tap unitil is is flush with the hub. Then take the old race, thick end against the new one, and tap both until they seat. The thick side of the old race will protrude enough so you can use a hammer and drift to tap it back out, with out touching the bearing face of the new race.

Check your PMs.
