On the ignitor, there are small letters (on the face of the ignitor) that shows what each post is. It will say 'B' and 'C'. 'B' connects to switched 12v (power when key is on). 'C' connects to coil negative. The other 'prong' isn't a prog at all. It is there for the electrical connector to clip on to.

When you stab it, first turn the engine to line up the leading mark with the timing pin. Then line up the dimple in the dizzy gear with the arrow on the base of the dizzy shaft. Hold rotor to keep dizzy from turning and stab it in. Initially set the dizzy so that the adjustment bolt is near the center of adjustment. That should get you close. Sometimes the dizzy will jump a tooth when you stab it, o you might need to re-stab if that happens.

Okay, first let's discuss the connectors for the igniter. I can't remember what is positive and what is negative. However, the third prong that has you confused is not for conducting electricity. The third prong is simply to keep the electrical connector from coming loose. When you connect the wiring to it, that prong makes it snap in place and stay.

Also, when you install the distributor you must first align your leading timing mark on the main eccentric shaft pulley, with the indicator pin next to it. Next, look at the gear on the end of the distributor. If you examine the gear carefully, you will see a dimple on one side of the gear. Also at the bottom of the distributor there is a raised indicator in the casting. Line the dimple up with the indicator in the casting.

Drop the distributor straight into the engine. Don't let the main eccentric shaft pulley, or the distributor drive gear rotate while installing it. This should give you correct results every time.

Rocking is what we do best. Watch out for igniters that may be connected backwards, and the distributor which may or may not skip a tooth during installation. If your timing seems all screwed up when you check it, that's usually the first two things to look for.
