So I slapped this ol' direct fire setup back on with the resistor in place. So far so good but I've only driven about 15 miles. The car pulls REAL strong in the high RPM's now.
I'll keep ya'll posted on how it performs.

nimrodTT was referring to the pickups firing the 2nd gen ignitor which I didn't use. I'm firing the 2nd gen coil with the stock J109 ignitor. The only two parts I used off the 2nd gen is the coil and the ballast resistor.
BTW, it continues to work quite well!

referring to your pics the black wire with the resistor is primary winding 12v pos. right? and the heat transfer paste like the stuff that goes on a processor in my computer right. The 81-85 dizzy signals L1 then L2 then signals "ok T1 T2 fire at the same time right??? so why doesnt any one put in a second gen dizzy /mag. pick up then get the trailing coils and run it with a 12a a Or is this just a big brain fart

Also, in a wasted spark setup the leading plugs fire at the same time not the trailing.

There's not much to explain. I simply hooked up the (-) and (+) wires from the old coil to the corresponding terminals on the 2nd gen coil. The only difference is that I installed the 2nd Gen ballast resistor on the (+) wire. That's it!
BTW, I have about 800 miles on this setup and it's still work'n great! The engine pulls very strong in the high RPM's to the point where it lurches forward between gears.

You can't use the 2nd gen crank angle sensor without an ECU. The CAS triggers the ECU which then sends a signal to the ignitors.

So let me get all of this straight: If you take a 2nd gen direct-fire ignition and coil setup, slap it onto a 12A, the engine actually idles smoother and gets better response at high RPMs ?

does anyone have the link to the site that explains how to put this in......ive seen it....im looking into this whole setup..
i wonder how itll do with a dellorto carb setup

I've got a lot of parts left over from my '91. I've got a CAS, both coils, and a computer from it. Does it mean i can get it to work w/2nd gen ignitors on my trailings since i already have an msd on the leadings. Or what else would i need if anyone knows?

yup! still run'n very strong! No more idling hickups and the top end is very strong.
EDIT: oh... and I'm getting between 1 and 3 more miles per gallon

sold the FD...kept the FB
You may have solved the mystery, cool.
btw, I've been running a 3rd gen coil for over a year now with the one stock ignitor and no resistors. No problems at all. Too bad FD leading coils are so much harder to find than FC ones.
edit: *Almost a year now*

If I remember correctly, from READING THIS THREAD (shame on you for not), the ballast resistor is located deep down inside the little box that's bolted to the FC leading coil. Just tear it apart carefully and locate it.
Ok, I just reviewed this thread and found what you're looking for (sort of). Look at the bottom of page one of this thread. innitab found the resistor, but the pic he posted is not working at this time.
Anyway, it's in there. Hopefully innitab will come online soon and be of more help.
