Input shaft wear----oil leak?
Input shaft wear----oil leak?
I am having a problem with rear oil leak from my 5-spd input shaft area.
I have replaced the rear input shaft seal "twice" but still leaking.
Could my input shaft be worn to the point of improper sealing?
Car has 200,000 miles.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Mine is leaking a little too. I figure Ill rebuild it when it starts leaving drips on the driveway. (right now there is just a light coating of gear lube "v"ing out from the rear seal) I dont think it will be too difficult, but is there any tricks or things to watch out for?
I pulled my driveshaft out and all the transmission gear oil came with it...
It wasn't leaking at all before I took the driveshaft out though..???
According to the first reply up there I have to either rebuild or replace... say it isn't so...

The purpose of the rear seal is to seal between the tranny and driveshaft. Normal fluid level is higher than the driveshaft so fluid comes out when it's removed. Once the driveshaft is reinstalled, refill with fluid.

Its not worth trying to rebuild your tranny, i asked a fellow at mazdatrix and he told me you need about 150 dollars in factory tools just to get it apart. When it really kicks the bucket, go out and buy a new or used one. get a TII one if your putting down extra power.
^ Trichoid, excuse my ignorance, but are you saying my rear seal is bad or that's normal...?? Every other transmission I've pulled never did that.
And I do have a complete TurboII tranns set-up from my last 1st gen I parted out...
but I was told by a local rotorhead that the 12A gearing is better for the amount of power I'm making. It will get you off the line quicker and still has a all around good gear ratio. No need to upgrade to a TII transmission until I hit 250ish hp...?
I took his word for it b/c I do remember MikeyD from MAZSPEED was running mid 12's in the 1/4 with a 12A trannsmission in his car. I remember him saying that if you launch easy and get into it smooth, a 12A tranns will hold up fine...?
