INFO: 81-83 and 84-85 Front Emblem Dimensions Here

Hi All,

I recently dropped a heavy thing on the nose of my 83 GSL. As well as installing 2 sharp dents, it exploded the 'm' from 'mazda' badge. So in shopping for a new emblem, I quickly discovered that there is the 81-83 2 pin version that is NLA and a 84-85 three pin version that is NOS and available from Mazdatrix and Atkins. What I couldn't find were any detailed pictures and measurements for what to expect for the three pin locations and confirmation of dimensions between the two versions. So here is a summary of that information for both styles.

81-83 Two Pin Version, F001-51-771

Size
1.09" / 27.5 mm in height, 6.16" / 156.5mm length, and 0.12" / 4.2mm thick

Pins
Pin 1 is 0.125" / 3.175mm and is located between the a and d. It's exactly 1.30" / 33mm from the end of the a and 0.48" / 12.2mm from the bottom edge, centerline
Pin 2 is same diameter, between the m and a, and is exactly 3.50" / 88.9mm from Pin 1. Same height as Pin 1

Attachment
Small metal clips the are pushed onto the pins from under the panel, they squeeze the pin and click into a ridge on the pin. If they aren't tight, just squeeze them together.

It looks red in this photo, just an artifact of the lighting in my office.

84-85 Three Pin Version, F023-51-770A

Size, Overall dims are the same, slightly thinner
1.09" / 27.5 mm in height, 6.16" / 156.5mm length, and 0.132" / 3.35mm thick

Pins
All three are 0.525" / 13.3mm from the bottom edge of the emblem
Pin 1 is 0.235" / 6.0mm from the edge of the a
Pin 2 is 2.710" / 68.9mm from pin 1
Pin 3 is 5.830" / 148.0 from pin 1

Attachment
The emblem pushes on from the front side with no clips underneath. It is an interference fit with a small foam gasket that seals against the panel when seated.

I've modified the three pin part to fit my two pin nose. First I protected the front and back side of the emblem with painter's tape. The I cut off the three pins and ground the remaining material to be flush to the surface. I marked the locations for the two pin version on the backside and JB welded new pins.

The "pins" are stainless steel flat head 4-40 bolts at 3//8" length. They have a short length of shrink tube to make up the 4-40's diameter to match the 1/8" of the original pins. I'll use the under mount fasteners from the old, broken emblem .

Good info, thanks for providing it.

I hope the jb weld and screws keep the emblem on there for a long time. Be sure to trim off any excess jb weld that may get in the way of the emblem sitting flush on the panel, but I'm sure you thought of that already!

Good advice indeed! I did some testing with the JB before committing to that approach. That stuff is tenacious.

I guess the alternative would have been automotive double stick, and I've used that for the side strip under the gas fill, where it's worked perfectly. In this case though, I like the idea of the pins locating it properly.

The body shop has my car for the next two weeks.
