Today, I've started taking my hood and headlight covers down to bare metal. I've been at it since 12:00pm and stopped working at aroun 8:00pm. The majority of the work was sanding through the half inch thick of filler,(yes I was using power tools) the finished product is awsome, and Will be really original, especially if I drop vent the hood. Pics will be up tomorrow afternoon, let me know what you think of the idea.

 

So you're just going to clear coat the bare metal or what? Could be interesting looking if you can get it straight and dent free.

Bare pollished metal might look good, depending on the colour of the car. It needs to contrast properly with the car. I've seen an FC done that way, although it looked like an all out drag car. So there was a purpose to having no paint. Lets see some pics ASAP.

My goal here, is to do something you don't see every day. Ever one has carbon hoods, and vented headlight covers, but I've yet to see anything bare metal on an SA. My car is white, with black fender mirrors, and silver wheels, and when the sun hit it's, the hood and headlight look amazing. I'll get pics up later today if it stops raining.

What, is the VW "rust" hood the new thing??? That has to be the dumbest thing I've EVER heard........... But I like your bare metal hood idea as long as it doesn't rust! lol

 

Rust is the new Carbon Fibre. Your hood gets lighter as it rots away.

 

I just got fender mirrors installed too, here's the only pic I could take before it started raining again, and no I will not let it rust, I'm not a fan of letting useful things rot away like an idiot. I used a high grade clear coat to prevent such things.

I dunno guys, I think those rust hoods are awesome! I love the whole idea of it being original and unique all its own.

 

rust isn't original rat rods do it all the time. but those v dubs look like poo or worse.

 

But you'd never have to wax it.

 

I'm aware that rat rods do it, what I meant is that everytime it is different, therefore it is original. And well about the looks on the VWs, thats like just your opinion man.

 

It would be cooler if the whole car was rust, but it looks crappy and cheep imo for the nice paint and rust. I really don't like the middle car. they could of at least directionally sanded it and made it look better. But its not my car. bare metal looks good but without the rust.

 

I NEED MORE PICS!!!!!! I love the risingsun of the headlight cover! I got one of the sunroof.

 

The rust thing is a new europe thing ... started seeing more and more of it in magazines. Sometimes its actually painted on like that, other times the hoods are let to rust than coated with a special paint that stops it from rusting further and just maintains that look.

I wanted to do my sunroof too, but I saw your's and didn't want to be a copycat lol. More pics will be up later tonight me and my friends are having a photoshoot tonight titled: "BoroBoro vs. DriftBrats" it should be fun.

 

As long as you already had the idea before you saw mine it wouldn't be copying! And I really wouldn't care either, it would kinda be cool, the risingsun gang! lol

 

Still crap but better than just a hood. but it could make an awesome sleeper. I cant really say too much my cars 5 different colors. mostly brown, but I have tornado silver pass fender, white bumper and light covers, w/ 2 colors of primer. But to be fair I just ran outta bondo to fix all the dings. soon it will be flat black, and when I finish everything I want to do she'll be painted proper

I gotta say, my car is a pretty awsome sleeper. I took it down to the track last night, and I ran against a couple swapped hondas, and my friends nitrous injected sc400. I won every race. Little did my friend know, I had just got mechanical secondaries done 5 minutes before we left. I beat his sc400 by about half a car. I'm amazed lol. Oh to risingsun roof, that'd be awsome, too bad all the poser 240's and civics ruined the idea of the rising sun being an inside things. Every day I see either a 240sx or a civic hatch with the rising sun on the hood
