Improved Steering?

My '79 FB does not have PS and the sterring is a little sloppy (compared to my FD). I reviewed the article on Mazspeed www.mazspeed.com/steeringear.htm. Anyone perform this mod? Like some info. Also, if there are other methods, I'd like to know.

Yes. I don't know if the SB is the same for my 85 as it is for your 79 though.

It will make ALL the difference in the world to your steering.

Your 1979 SA22C RX-7 should have the same steering box as the later model 81-85 FB. When you say a little sloppy, how much play are we talking about here? Unfortunately the steering in your SA22C will never be as tight as the rack in your FD. If you have a 1/2 inch of play in your wheel, then don't worry about it. If it's more like 1 to 2 inches, then this procedure will help you out.

Of course, I'm assuming that all the other steering components are in order, as any one piece gone bad could create play in the steering.

the adjustments are different between the sa's, 81-83?, and 84-85. however the sa's has the easiest adjustment. looking at the top of the box you will see a screw with a large locking nut. back the locking nut off and tighten with a flathead. make sure not to get crazy and overtighten it as this will cause excessive wear as well as weight your steering. sit back and enjoy the fact that the front wheels now turn as the steering wheel does instead of 5 sec later. also make sure your idler arm bushings are ok as this will have a profound effect. since they sit rather close to the thermal reactor, they have a tendency to desintegrate. my 79's were none existent when i bought the car. i thought it was a severly blown clanking strut at first.
