im wondering if i can rebuid my engine for less than 10x the price of my car?

Ok, im gettin set to rebuild an engine,so im like ill see how much, i know the full mazda kit from RB is like $900, and thats alot, so i went to mazdatrix, and for there gasket set+rotor kit, its still more than $900,
Is there somewhere i can buy the parts to fully rebuild my engine ( i dont want it to break cause im gunna port etc. etc.) for around $500-$600?

If you just need new seals its possible.. but if you need anything else your going to be screwed... And you wont know that until you get it all apart. Even if you got the $900 kit with rotors you could still be screwed if your housings are starting to flake away.. then you are looking at 400 - 500 for a new housing.. and if you need two thats $1000 plus the rebuild kit so thats almost 2000... so.. 2k is about the price of the car so look on the brightside its not 10X. Unless you can get on the mazda racing thinggy for parts then you can get everything you need for cost which is basically half off so you could get it for $1000.. But you have to race your car or know someone that does and is willing to buy the parts for you...

Look at it this way; if you do rebuild it, it may end up costing more than some other car, but at least you'll have the satisfaction/pride of having done it yourself, and a fun car to drive too.

By the way, I don't believe in the 'price of the car' bit I'm always hearing non-car-type people say. You know, parting out a car or selling it as a non-runner instead of rebuilding the engine simply because the amount of money it would take to rebuild it is close to, or higher than, the original price they spent (on a used car around 20 years old mind you) or the Blue book, or the percieved value, or what have you.

An example is let's say you bought a car for $1000 (nice round number). Then you spend $1500 on stereo equipment. That right there would raise a few eyebrows. Then the engine starts to give you trouble, so you start weighing your options. You ultimately decide to spend another $900 and rebuild the engine yourself.

You're only out $3400.

That is kinda steep all at once. Of course we are talking grand total spent on the entire project from day one. This is still quite a bit lower than newer cars.

Of course if the engine would have started acting strange right before you spent your money on stereo stuff, well... A friend of mine experienced something like this, only never rebuilt the engine even after spending a fair amount on a few specialized tools to tear the engine down. It was a Fait X1/9.

I rebuilt my 81 for aroun $1100 (7 years ago-priced havent changed that much since) replaced bearings, all rubber seals, all metal seals. I know how much I have left on the eng too. Great feeling, and like Jeff said, the satisfaction of doing it all myself was well worth the $1100 and more.

I'm shocked how cheap Rotary engines are.

I once bought a 12A engine right from the dealer in town for 1300$ including tax and delivered to my door step.

If you are not able to work with someone who has built a roatry engine you might want to just purchase an engine for Atkins or some place like that.

Since you're soliciting opinions (and I've always got one )....

If you car currently moves, and I'm assuming it does since you're a pizza boy, go to a few autocrosses. Sign up for the Mazdaspeed Motorsports deal, and buy all your parts at cost.
A) You'll be a better driver and learn how to drive by going to the autocrosses.
2) You'll get any and all parts you need for cost.

And best of all, the required number of autocrosses is less than the price difference between buying from RP/Mazdatrix and Mazdaspeed (except, of course, for the fact that you'll get addicted to the go-fast crackpipe and spend all your spare money making your car go faster).
