Im a new member, i just got a 84 gsl rx-7, and have some ?

I just wanted to say hi I guess lol, I only know a little bit about rx-7's. I also wanted to know a little about the car I purchased. Supposedly there is something special about it, it has disc brakes in the back and a limited slip and some other options. I got it for $400 but there is a Bering or something like that that has gone bad. I think the Bering is where the input shaft of the transmition goes into the crank shaft (or what ever you call it on a rotary engine), is there a Bering there or something like that. The input shaft on the trany has some gouges in it. If any one could help me with this that would be great. I first want to get it running and drive it for a while, and then I want to put some go fast goodies on it.

Thanks
Ben Stockman

Pilot bearing. Somebody may have forgotten to grease it during a clutch job. Just a little grease is all it takes.

So are you saying I don’t have to replace it? The guy before said it felt rough, but if all it needs is a little grease that is great! What do you mean by hybrid?

Thanks

yea, it's a gsl.. by hybrid he means parts from different models put into one car.. but the gsl sounds about right, seeing it says it on the back of your car.. =)

as for the bearing... do you have the transmission out now? you can crawl under and feel the bearing, make sure it isn't busted.

as far as the bearing goes, I agree with Jeff and unsupa.

As far as the -se vs gsl goes, with a LSD and disc rear end, it matches what a gsl should have. Since the body has the GSL badges, I'd assume it's a GSL.

When I bought the car the previous owner took it apart and removed the transmission. I just stuck my finger where the Bering is suppose to be and tried to rotate the bearing and nothing turned and it wasn’t smooth like the inside of a bearing it was rough. Also when I pulled my finger out there where a lot little metal bits on it. So I think that the Bering is gone I guess you could say and defiantly needs to be replaced? Dose this sound right?

Thank you for your help,
Ben Stockman

Every car for sale has really special options. My MX-6 has oscillating center vents. Oooh. Aaaah.

Shouldn't the difference between GSL and GSL-SE be as simple as it having a 12A or a 13B?

It sounds to melike someone took the old pilot bearing our with a dremel and F-ed up your E-shaft.

Rear disc brakes were standard equipment on GSL models. Maybe someone swapped rear-ends on your car. Or maybe the GSL badges were swapped.

S and GS models had standard drum brakes with disc brakes as an option.

I think what he is describing is the throwout bearing. Thats the bearing on the input shaft of the transmission. The pilot bearing is inside the end of the eccentric shaft. Either one costs about 25 dollars for a new one. If it's the throwout bearing, buy a 89 turbo throwout bearing. They are beefier and fit exactly the same. To replace, you just take the tranny out, grease the input shaft a LITTLE bit (too much will result in grease on clutch, not good), and put the new one on.

To replace the pilot bearing, you need a pilot bearing and seal, and a pilot bearing puller. You can chissle it out, but it's risky (ask coldy13 what happened when he did it). You also must take the tranny out to replace the pilot bearing.

My recommendation: replace both.
