Ignition Troubleshooting Links?

Can anyone post some links to troubleshoot a first gen ignition system?
I have no spark from the leading coil and I've searched the forums, but I haven't found a good guide. I have read up with the three manuals I have but it would be nice to have a comprehensive step by step guide so I can do it right.

Grab a test light or VOM. check if you have voltage on the both coil's + terminal. And make your own Igniter Tester like this one

Looks easy enough.
I wonder if I could swap in a solid state relay (hockey puck style)?

I got a coil and wires to swap in for testing because it's hard to tell if they’ve gone bad. What about the low tension signal from the dizzy to the coils? Any way to test that? O-Scope(it's been a while sense I've used mine).

Go to the junkyard and get a couple J109s for a swap test. If you don't need them now you may still need them later. Should be cheap, at the JY.

No Sparky

No leading spark.
No trailing spark.
Both coils get 12.7v.
High tension wires are good.
Pulled the inginiters to test but I dought both would go bad together.
Did I pull a signal wire?
Any ideas?

Tach

The tach goes to 6K when the key is turned to the run position and drops to 2.5K when the key is turned to the starter position.

When you converted to electronic ignition, from points, how did you run your wires from the coil to the igniters? NM, just send me a pm with details. make it easier for everyone.

Its easier to just run new wires from the coil to the 81-85 dizzy. you have to make your own igniter tester using the above pix.

But does that diagram apply to J105's?
Don't they trigger backwards?
Anyway what's odds of both going bad at the same time?

Of course it will. The SA's has a tach is also a volt meter.

So which electronic dizzy do you have? 80 with a separate igniter box OR 81-85.
If its 81-85, did you use the stock wiring harness OR did you run a new wire from the coil to dizzy.

It would be really nice to have all the detials instead of a little fart here and there.

I have the stock 1980 SA ignition system.

Does it make sense that the tach moves but there is no spark?

I'm confused

First make your own igniter tester. it should work on the longer 80 style. BTW, in case you havent read, the SA"s tach is also a volt meter. So when you turn on the ignition, the tach will jump.

Yes but...

Since it does jump does that mean that my dizzy is working?
Does it mean my igniters are working?
I'll test the igniters this afternoon anyway.
