Ignition Timing Problem

Decided to timing the other day, never done it on a rotary though. Car is running fine. When checking the timing I found that it was 90degrees advance. Dizzy slot is smack in the middle. Is this correct?

If it's off by 90 degrees, you can prolly bet the front pully is the problem. They will bolt on in any of 4 ways, but only one will allow for correct timing adjustment.

Yep. On the pulley there should be two timing marks. The one that is in-line with a set of bolts is the TDC or leading mark. The one to the left of that (looking down at the pulley from the front of the engine) is the trailing. Just flip that pulley until the timing light finds the leading mark and then you can adjust from there.

"Just flip that pulley..."

Said as if it were easy. I had that problem once and found it was easier to just measure the circumference of the pulley, divide by 4, and paint on new marks as appropriate. Works for me.

I think that ambiguity problem only existed for a year or two when the pulley wasn't keyed.

I'd still like to know how to static-time the ignition.

It wasn't until the 2nd gens came out, that the pulley could be installed one way. This was done by off seting one of the 4 holes. All of these pulleys also have an tiny circle stamped on the pulley face so the multiple pulleys are easily lined up.

The circle is the only key, no woodruffs here.
