Ignition switch/lock cylinder question
Is it the lock cylinder that contains the spring mechanism to return the key from the start position to the run position? I went to start my fb the other day, something popped, and the spring tension went away. The key will no longer activate the starting system. Thankfully the switch was in the run position when it broke so I can still drive the car. I'm assuming I need a new lock cylinder but I wanted to run it by the forum members first. I did see several posts in the archive on the parts in question but nothing that answers this specific question.

The spring is not in the key cylinder. It is in the electrical switch. Often the slot in the plastic electrical switch breaks and the tab that fits into it from the mechanical switch will no longer turn the electrical switch. If you remove the steering column cover you can see the electrical switch attached to the back of the mechanical switch with 1 small phillips screw.

That's what I would have thought. What had me confused was the 83 GSL parts car I just bought. The lower portion of the column had been removed and the switch was just hanging loose. I could start the car with a screwdriver but the switch wouldn't return to the run position by itself. It didn't have any spring tension either. That is what lead to me posting this question. Thanks 74RX4 for the info.
