Ignition shorted out eveything

Today i was painting the center console and the speedometer dislpay both which I removed and the steering column. One every thing was dry I resembled every thing and it appear that the ignition was stuck, it would not turn. Seem sticky. I finally got it to turn but had a weird sticky feeling. I didnt drive the car. Tonight I went to start it up and could see some sparks fly and I lost power to everything, the lights still work but its too dark to see anything. Just need to know what to check first in the mourning. Any help is appreciated.

Did you properly install the ignition switch?

Where did you see the sparks?

Did you check your Fuses and Fusible Links?

A little more detail would help.

I never took off the ignition that the crazy part. The sparks came from the ignition area when I was turn back to the off position and it seemed to happen when it stuck. I have never dealt with the fuseable links. I see where there are, what do I check for on them.

Ok Its day light now and i took a look at the main fuseable link and its broken in half. Ive done some quick searching online and really havent had any luck finding one. Is this like a MAzda only part or can I find this at any hardware or auto store?

Inspect all the wire jackets sounds like something is shorting out.

it appears that a screw in the bottom of the steering column was too long and touching the ignition causing it to stick. I remove it and the ignition turns fine. This was a mismatch screw placed in by the previous owner. Placed in a bussman FLF 60 fuse and everything came back to life.
