I run a direct fire set up, but i still use the dizzy for the trails. I imagine you'd have to run a second gen set up or an aftermarket ecu to use the crank (e-shaft) angle sensor.

Even the second gens have a dizzy, just no plug wires going into it, the signal goes to the ecu, then to the coil packs for firing. The 2nd gen one is a CAS, or crank angle sensor.
If you are looking to eliminate the dizzy entirely, then one needs a pickup on the e-shaft pulley, and the wiring ecu and software to support it. Not an off the shelf item.

The FD's use a crank angle sensor that's under the main pulley. Its a magnetic pick up style, so yes, no dizzy. They also don't use a mass air flow sensor either.
