Ignition problem?
Hi, I'm new to the club and this forum, so be gentle. I have an '84 GSL that I got for nothing a few years ago. It had been sitting in a garage for 4 years, and I got it running fairly quickly. The previous owner said it had electrical problems. I drove it for a few months, and it started losing power one day, but I replaced an ignitor and it ran fine after that. Drove it for over a year and a seal blew in the back rotor. Parked it for a year and a half, then put an Atkins rebuild in it last fall. Drove it to break in the motor, and the power thing came up again intermittently. When it was intermittent, it would work and not work seemingly at random. Just parking it over night would usually find it running fine the next day. Replaced the other ignitor, and it ran fine. Took it to my daughter at college for her to drive, and it lasted about three weeks before it failed again. I went down (350 miles!) to try and troubleshoot it to see what was really wrong, and didn't succeed. This is what it does: It runs fine at idle, but feels like the ignition seems to cut out above 1200 RPM. If you advance the throttle VERY fast to 4000, it seems to be better, but still not right. On decel, it hesitates at about 1200 for a few seconds, then settles back to idle. Normal accel is rough above 1200, and no power. I did some troubleshooting before I ran out of time, and it seems like the vacuum advance is not getting the signal. Both advance valves work with 12v on them. Could this be a malfunction in the ECU. I'm new to the mechanical workings of the RX-7, but I'm trying to learn as fast as I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
