ignition problem.....

okay so I bought this 83 GSL in non running condition.
I get it home and the compression is fine. I try to fire it up and after a few attempts is starts but it is almost impossible ot keep it on. I have to aggressively play with the throttle to just keep it stuttering at 1k RPM.
It basically sounds like a motor running on just one rotor or with some blown seals.....
A very familiar sound to me...LOL
So I call the guy I bought it from, a buddy of mine, and he tells me that it stopped running after they removed all the emmisions and cut the wires to all those little plugs that would normally sit along top the motor.
WEll I swapped in a motor I have just because it was low miles on a rebuild, just for ease of mind and reliability since I didn't know what condition his motor is in.
so I swap everything under the hood. even ignition coils, dizzy, alt, everything on the motor is from my last FB. The fuel delivery is normal, pressure and everything are correct. The carb is fine, I tried it on another car and it fired right up. It has a stright pipe exhaust so there is no Cat that could be clogged.
So it still started and ran the same way. All 4 plugs are firing and the timing as far as I can tell is correct. So it must be some result of cutting the wires and not tapping them off. Yes, they were left bare to short out on anything.
So what i figure to do next is simplify things
and put my own hand made harness in and put it on a switch with some relays.
So here is my question.
I want to put the ignition system, coils, ignitiors on a switched simple circuit.
What do I need to give power to??
Looking at the wiring diagram in the repair manual it seems that the power from battery is switched on and off by way of the key ignition. Then it is direct to the coils and ignitors by way of the black wire with white stripe. And the plugs and coils fire when the magnetic pickup triggers the ignitors and it lets them ground and fire to the plugs......
I think I am right so far but correct me if I am not.
Okay so given all this can I give power directly to the coils and copy the harness without the portion that goes to the keyed ignition switch and have it all work properly??? Using a proper switch and correctly rated relay of course.
Please Help I want this car running by this week so I can sell my GSL-SE and get my TurboII FC done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
