IF you had the chace to buy an 1984 GSL-SE for 2200, would you do it?

Well the title says it all. I am a rotary newbie and I dont know a lot about them. I do know they are extremly light and handle well but 130 HP doesnt seem like a lot, even if it is lightweight.

My question is, is it possible to make an 84 13b fast and how would I go about doing so? I have been reading up on the FAQ's and stuff and it seems like porting is the way to go. Where would I go to have my engine ported and rebuilt at the same time and also what 1/4 mile times would I be looking at?

I am not a drag queen (hah) and I dont only care about the 1/4 mile time. I like an all-around sports car that is light, and handles well, but I want some power to back it up. If you had the chance to get a mint body 13b fuel injected car would youin hopes of making it fast? Now I wouldnt want to swap in an turbo engine as that seems like a waste as I might as well buy a turbo car to begine with.

Thanks for reading and replying!

O btw the cars body is mint, no underbody rust, and it has low-ish miles (or so the sign says, I havent called the guy yet)

If I had that kinda money sure I would. That sounds cheap to me. I have yet to see a GSL-SE in Oklahoma. Even if there's rust I could just swap all teh good stuff to my GS. I'd do it if I had teh extra money.

yes! they are fun right out of the box. there are a bunch of threads about porting the 6port 13b (6port vs 4 port etc...)

i've had my SE for a long long time and other than the K&N / Racing Beat exhaust it's pretty much stock, not a whole lotta torque but fun as hell to drive!

Damn, you guys live in the wrong region. I paid 600 for mine and have already driven 8000 troublefree miles and I know where another one is for 1200obo.

Wow so many replys in so little time. I might have to call the guy up. My only other consern is that Im tall and fat. 6'7" and 350 pounds. I might not fit to well into it. I can get into an 87-92 supra easy so I figure it might not be bad. Only car I cant drive is an MR2 but everything else Ive tryed I can.

I just called the guy up and Im going to go test drive it Thursday. He said it was rebuit at 100k miles which was 30k miles ago, and the clutch was replaced 15k miles ago. Says it runs like a top and the body has two small rust spots which I didnt see when I got there. I tryed looked underneath it but couldnt see because it sat so low and I ddint want to mess up my clothing.

I might be a new 7 owner on Thursday

Supras are boats compared to our RX-7s. But as far as that offer goes, Hell...I think I'd pay 4k for a car like that if I had the money one me.

If you think a supra is a boat look at my current car, an 1997 Buick Regal GS supercharged. Its damn quick (best time modded so far is 13.8) but is FWD auto which is no fun at ALL. I looked at an 1991 SAAB 9000 Turbo and its freaking quick with a decent aftermarket that can be made damn fast but its FWD which is Wrong-Wheel-Drive. I dont mind FWD as much as I hate auto though. Auto is no fun what-so ever. My 1988 supra turbo was a great car and quick, and handles awsome but it just rusted to much. I figured it wasnt worth to restore.

If this 7 impressise me in more than a couple ways then Ill buy it. Speed isnt as much as a factor as the fun I can have! Taking corners fast is awsome, but when you cant get the speed fast enough then its a wasted effort!

big joe... 6'7 350 really is huge. I know of guys on this forum who are 6'4 and fit... but BARILY (And most of them are rediculously skinny) you're gonna have to bring the seat all the way back, and will probably want a smaller steering wheel so you can fit your legs in.

but stock gsl-se's are great fun

you may even wind up losing the storage bins and making custom seat mounts. I'm 6'3 and about 280. it fits me VERY snugly

GSL-SE is lots of fun. 135hp is enough to get you into all sorts of trouble. If you don't mind being "average" compared to more modern cars in terms of power you'll be fine. The simplicity of the FB and it's even weight distribution makes it a FUN car to drive.

And power wise you can do lots of stuff, small bolt ons to full uber 3rotor turbo swaps. Or v-8 swap but you didnt' hear it from me.

FWIW: $3700 for my GSL-SE w/ new motor in Bay Area.

The best bet to see if it's a good deal? DRIVE IT! Drive it hard and see if it's worth that money to you. Hope this helps.

You people are bizarre. When I got my car I was 6'8" and weighed 350. I fit just fine. Granted I fit BETTER now that I'm down to 285, but it was still an easy fit and a fun drive.

Heh, whoops... I forgot: get the car. GSL-SEs are nice, even if they won't win awards for fastest quarter mile.

I can't NOT buy a local GSL-SE's.

I'd pay $2,200 for one in a heartbeat.

The bottom line is,,,, you have to drive the car, drive it hard too, remember it's old
and these cars demand alot of attention from there owners.

Carbs and protien. I used to play football in Highschool, I was a "buff" 250 pounds. (I use buff lightly, but I did max out at 475 pounds bench. I also like to stress the word DID)

3 years of college, to lazy to cook real food and pizza is o-so-easy to dial and pay with a credit card later = one fatass.

How do I make my cars go faster? I personaly go on a diet! Or at least I should!

Hes a serious question though, the bolt patern looks kinda funky and it looks like it would be hard to find after market wheels. Hell, tire rack list ONE wheel that is not only not the best looking, its also heavy. Anyone know of any 17's that not only fit, but are lightweight? Im going for pure function and not "sho" I love the new Rx8 wheels but to bad they are 5 lug. Its also my understand the bigger the tire and the stiffer the side wall the better the handling? But also the more effort to turn. So in reaitly the best drag whell would be a 14 inch 10 pound wide wheel with slicks, but a good handling wheel would be an 18 with really stiff sidewall?

Im just kinda shooting out questions, cause like I said before, Ima newbie to not only RX7's and rotors, but handling as well.

On a GSL-SE the lug pattern is 4x114.3 and if you do a search with that lug pattern you will find I lot of wheels to fit it.

If it was me, and I was looking for a near mint car with no need for immediate major mechanical work or especially bodywork, I would be willing to fork out $2,200 clams for a GSL-SE.

As far as size? I'm a 'smallish' 6', 200lb guy, and I find my GSL fits like a glove. However- If I was any bigger, especially over 300lbs.. I could not imagine driving a 7. My buddy 'Pancake' is 6'1", 350lbs, and benches over 500lbs. Whenever he gets in my 7, it takes a lot of damn effort! And his damn tree-tuunk legs and arms are all over the cabin! Needless to say, his daily driver is a Ford F-250 .

I paid 2,700 for my 85 GSL-SE w/137k one owner. That car sold new for 16,325.
Very good condition. It's not my daily driver and I keep her garaged. If I found another one, I'd pay 2200 for sure.
