What would you guys do if you drained you 7's oil and to your horror there was fuel in it!

A. Ignore it, put in new oil and keep on driving.
B. Start pricing up parts for a rebuild

Seriously though, is gas in the oil is a sign of a worn rotary, and is ONLY cause by worn oil control rings / seals right?

Is there any other cause of gas in the oil?

No my RX-7 doesn't have gas in the oil, I'm just trying to find some info.

if you flodded it before, you will find gas in your oil

how often do you change it?

a problem in the carburator, will also send fuel into the engine with the car turned off and it will find its way to the oil pan

I dont think the Oil Control Rings have anything to do with it

Can flooding really allow gas into the oil? Cause I've flooded my car before, and haven't found fuel in the oil.

Worn out oil control rings/ seals would create blow-by allowing fuel to get into the oil.

I dont think thats how it works.... Im pretty sure there is no blow-by

When out cars smoke, is because the oil control rings are unable to "clean" the oil film on the side housings and thats what gets burned. They kinda "skate" on it

But again, I could be wrong

I always thought that if you found gas in the oil of a rotary you should run away from it.

Gas in the oil, not oil in the gas

How much "gas in the oil" are you talking?

If you've got 2000-3000 miles on the oil and it "just smells a bit like gas" draining, that's normal. Don't worry about it.

If your oil is seriously diluted, then that's either most likely from running stupidly rich, and/or side seals wearing out (which they don't tend to do - usually if they have problems, it's from the engine being overrevved & them getting wedged in place).

You're both kind of wrong.

Blow-by can be caused by the side seals not sealing properly or incorrect side to corner seal clearance.

When the oil control seals wear out they allow oil from inside the rotor to flow into the combustion chamber.

This still does not explain a gas smell in the OIL. This would just mean you burn more oil. Unless you are saying that the fuel in the combustion chamber is leaking into the rotor past the control seals during combustion, which is plausible if the pressure in the combustion chamber exceeds the sealing pressure of the oil seals. But given that the fuel is in gaseous form, I wonder how bad the oil seals would have tobe to collect enough gas to be detectable?

I dont know what causes it but my old 86 GXL always had a STRONG gas smell even though I changed the oil religiously every 1.5K. Had it for four years, never gave me a problem

I am rebuilding a 79 with bad oil seals, rear rotor was completely caked with burned oil on it. Interestingly the oil DID NOT smell like gas. WHO KNOWS!

I've had rotaries for 15 years and every time I changed the oil it smelled like gas never looked to see how much gas was in it never had a problem my engines have ranged from 50 to 190k on them all the same oil has a gas smell.
