if i had to have a broken speedo....
i'm glad its this one
the haynes manual and the service manual are enough information to get into the dash and the speedo. but before i go tearing into it i thought i'd ask for opinions.
i know its getting signal, the faster i drive the faster it will spin, also, it spins backwards when driving in reverse. it seems like speedo problems are up in the air usually, and can be as easy as wd40, or needing replacement. i verified that the odometer is working correctly by driving a known distance in my other car, then in the 7.
December 30th was the first day in 5 years she's moved under her own power, so i'm just getting to find out all these little things that are wrong
any thoughts would be appreciated.

Apparently your current speedo will sell pretty well on here. You could even swap it, troubleshoot the old unit, and tell everyone what happened to cause the failure. It could be the next sleepy-eye headlight mod!

Deja Vu!
That's awsome! I'e only ever seen that once before, on my old 81 camaro. Never did figure out why it happened, just replaced it. Thanks for the memories. Those days I stayed so wasted we all just thought it was hilarious. (till my first speeding ticket)

I actually disassembled my instrument cluster to clean it up and see what I could do with it, (mine is for the 13B GSL-SE but it still the same cable driven speedo style.) I can give you a few hints as to what it might be...
There is a spring that controls the return on your speedo as well as a sort of torque converter looking thing on the drive shaft of the speedo that has a tab, that tab forces the needle to stop at its predetermined swing (0-90moh, ect.) It seems that this section of your speedo could be missing/damaged/modified in someway.

i just double checked the criteria for state inspection. looks i dont need a working speedo. so i get to keep it! i just sort of assumed it would be required
i will replace it eventually. its just farther down on my list.

Outstanding, all you need to do is get a tac to count how fast the needle is turning to figure out how fast you're going. Just the other day I was cruising 140 mph going to work in a 55 mile road. Funny thing is that every body was doing the same so must be why no one was ticketed.
Anybody know a good speedo shop in the Colorado Springs area?
