idling problems etc

I have an 83 with a 5 speed. I just recently my alternator belt snapped and my air pump belt came off the pulley. i replaced the alternator belt and when i put the air pump belt back on the bolt snapped when i tried to tighten it, so i took the air pump off to take the broken bolt out and i discovered that the air pump hose wasnt connected to anything. it was sucking air from the intake but it wasnt going anywhere, so i just took it off until i can get the bolt out. the car runs fine except for idling - it idles at the right speed but it stalls very easily and it doesnt sound right. i adjusted the idle air screw and it didnt change anything. i cant find the idle mixture screw, its supposed to be right by the other one but its not there. any ideas on what is wrong or where my mixture screw is? thanks in advance for any help. also, my new alternator belt squeaks alot but its not loose - is it normal for new belts to sqeak for a little bit - is there a break in period?

i have the same year, same everything. You shoul first tighten up that alt belt, you don't want it slipping at high speeds, for your water pump's sake. The crappy idle is either from bad mixture, or the vaccume leak from the missing air pump, if you can i'd fist try to find where the air pump connects to, and cap it off, it should attach to the ACV (air control valve) to the left side of the air pump directly behind it. The mixture scew is easy to find, but i had a hard time trying to find the idle screw at first, the mixture screw is easily seen, right in the mid section of the carb looking from the drivers side. the idle screw is about 6 inches to the right and down about 2-3 inches. hey thanks matty, now i know where both screws are...ill have to tinker with them to see if i can get it to idle better. as far as the belt, it is as tight as i can get it, the only thing i can think of is that it needs to be broken in cause its brand new.

the only other screw i could find that looked like it could be the idle screw was about 3 inches to the right of the mixture screw. at first i thought it was the idle screw but when i turned it nothing changed. also dont think its the mixture because i turned it left until it was to rich and then i turned it to the right until it was about to stall so i knew the boundaries and then i put it in them middle and tweaked it to the best i could and it still sounds crappy.

You have to block off the ACV valve when removing the air pump.
Also, when you remove the air pump you have to install a double pulley on the alternator or it will always squeal from slipping.

The ACV was already blocked off before i took the air pump off. it doesnt make any sense- it only started idling crappy after i took the air pump off but it wasnt hooked up in the first place!! could it be possible that something else happened to break at the same time, the idle compensator maybe?

im planning on putting the air pump back i just have to get the broken bolt out first, i guess ill just have to deal with the squealing until then
