MO Idle spped screw backwards???

Hello there. I've got an 83 gsl with the rats nest delete and I've been trying to adjust the carb after a rebuild. I've got the mixture screw 3 turns out but when I go to adjust the idle speed if I turn the screw in (clockwise) the idle speed increases. I thought that turning the idle speed screw clockwise was supposed to lower the idle speed. Right now the idle speed screw is almost as far out as it can go and the idle speed is still at almost 1,500 rpm.

Other stuff I've done includes the following:

1. Hollowed out my magnaflow cats after one of them melted and got red hot.
2. Replaced the spark plugs last night.
3. Replaced the accelerator pump during the carb rebuild.
4. Disconnected the air pump and the anti afterburn valves as part of the rats nest delete.

Aside from the high idle, when I drive it the car still sputters and is really low on power. It struggles to rev when I'm accelerating and struggles to reach 70 mph.

Any ideas??

the idle screw is a fine adjustment mixture screw, the idle stop screw on the throttle lever cam itself is used for rough adjustments. be sure the throttle cable is slack and that you have checked the butterfly to bore gaps and set those properly.

semi clogged metering jets down in the main carb block can also cause the idle mixture screw to not work properly.

Thanks for the input. I'll definitely check the throttle cable for the idle.
