It depends on the port but mine likes to sit at about 1400. Go any lower and it starts getting too rough.

Mines at about 1k, I would prefer a little lower but the plugs foul when I'm at a stop light and have the A/C on as it is.

This is some cool advice. I'm going to build a street ported 12A soon (already cleaned the housings, am going to clean the rotors later today). I'll aim for about 1000.

set my 12a streetport to idle at 1000-1100. intakes a tad bigger than the racing beat template. exhaust port was quite mild.

Mine idles at 800rpm, but, it idles a lot nicer at 1k so I've got it idling at 1k. It survives drops to "0" on the tach every now and again when cold and keeps on running ...

Zulu, do you have a stock flywheel? My '74-size ported engine (largest stock ports of the NA engines) will actually trick me into thinking it died when all I've got to do is hit the pedal a little and it'll come back to life. It can idle at 400-500 but I usually keep it between 700-800. It's got an REPU (very heavy) flywheel.
