Ok, the haynes manuel sucks at this. Where it says the two screws are there is only one. I am fairly sure it is the mixture screw.

so where is the Idle adjust screw.

Alright, the drivers side of the carb, there should be one in front, which is the idle, and one in the back, which is the mixture. The one in the back is hidden kinda. I think its sort of back behind a hose. You might want to spray it down with some carb cleaner to get a better view.

It's easiest to get at with a really long screwdriver. There could be a cap over it that you'll have to pry off, if it hasn't been adjusted before.

It's easy to tell which is which if you aren't sure - the idle speed screw will simply raise and lower the engine speed. The mixture screw will cause the engine to run roughly and eventually stall if you turn it too far one way or another.

Search the forum, this has been asked 1000 times.

No offense, but Blitz0309 is wrong, the mixture screw is in the front and idle adjust is in the back (directly behind the idle compensator hose that comes off the air cleaner). I have an 82 and am still working on the correct balance.

Yeah that sounds right - I always remember the mixture screw being easy to access and the idle speed one being tougher to see. I don't worry about that anymore though... the mixture screws on my Dellorto are *extremely* easy to find

I just found them on mine(85 gs, same place), now my idle is back down to 800 instead of 1300. Now, I just turned the mixture some(forget which direction) to smooth out the idle. I'd like to have it run a little rich. I'm guessing that counter-clockwise makes it run richer, is that right?

theres only one screw and thats it.

Before I turned it. It would idle at about 500 rpms for about 15 seconds (hunting like mad) and then it would die. I cranked it to the left about 3 turns and now it idles at about 750 and it stable but not pefectly smooth.

I am sure I have some kind of vacuum leak. I can hear a loud hissing sound from the carb. That wasnt there before.

I think Im going to pull the rats nest.

If the 82 carb is the same as the 85 then there will be 2 screws. Looking from the drivers side there is one sticking out from near the middle of the carb, and another hidden on the right side. The one on the right is the idle speed, the other one is the mixture. I played around with them a little, I got my car from idling at 1300 to about 600-700 and its still very smooth.

Some Nikki's only have the one screw. (can't remember which years?) Idle speed is adjusted by turning the throttle stop screw near the linkages.

The 79/80 had two screws one on top of the another. The big screw is the idle speed the other is the mixture. On 81-85 there were also two screws one mixture screw in the middle of the carb and the idle speed screw over to the right by the accelerator pump. It is hard to see and needs a long screw driver to reach.
