Idle & Fuel Q

I have a 83 GSL with Racing Beat Holley carb setup, and Racing Beat street port exhaust system. I have two problems, one is that around 3,500 to 4,000 rpms it cuts out for a good second before acceleration picks back up. I have a universal in line fuel pump. So im not sure if its not getting enough fuel or too much to were its flooding. The second problem is I can't get it to idle under 1,200 to 1,500 rpms. The idle screw is turned all the way out and the cable is adjusted properly. My questions are, is there a way to get the idle lower and do I have the right set up for the fuel system. Do I need a bigger fuel pump with a pressure regulator, and if so what p.s.i for a fuel pump do I need and what pressure should it be regulated at? Info would be greatly appreciated

i'm not an expert, but i might be able to help.first question i have is how long have you had the holley and has it always acted like that? the holleys from racingbeat are good set ups. but you still have to tune them a little per aplication. thats the only downfall. the stumble around that rpm's is due to a few things. the secondaries are opening without enough fuel being delivered so then you get a stumble. there's too many ways to try to fix it, and with a racing beat holley i haven't the foggiest. i use a shelf bought holley myself. the easiest way to fix it would be changing the spring, fuel jets, or even the cam. if it's new for you i would get ahold of racingbeat and ask them questions. i've heard they are real good at that.

as for fuel pressure? you need a good 6psi. i run 8 in mine, but i also ran the stock pump for a good while and had no problems. now i run a holley blue (might be an overkill but i want enough fuel for my nitrous) regulated at 8psi. so i myself would say to go with an aftermarket pump. holley red, holley blue, carter, or mallory. and a pressure regulator is always good to have.

for the idle, well congats. mine stays around 1500 to 2000. i don't mind the higher idles. if you say it stays there with the idle screw all the way out and your cable is set right. undo the cable once and see if it goes down. the cable might feel good but it also might be holding the throttle more than thought.

good luck.

The set up is new to me. I bought the car over the summer and the carb was shot, for it had been sitting for 12 years. Instead of tryin to deal with the hassel of rebuilding the stock and lack of mechanics willing to work on 7's around here I took it to Rx7 world. They put the Holley set up and Exhaust on it. I don't so much mind the high idle, but would prefer it to be lower. He had said somethin about changing the springs for the secondaries, but from what I have been feeling with my set up has somethin to do with my fuel set up. So should I try a fuel pump capable of 8 psi and a regulator tuned to 6?

when I had a holley setup, on my old 12a, 5-6psi worked the best. Make sure both floats are set correctly. Your high idle sounds like a vacuum leak, as I was always able to stall the engine by turning the idle screw too far
