Idle/Dying problem for 85 GSL-Se

Hi all,

My 85 SE runs, but not very well. When I start it up, it does not idle. Usually it dies right after I start it up, unless I give it some gas for a little while.

When it finally idles (sort of), it is ~1200-1500 rpm.

The car also dies when I am coming to a stop sign or something. I'm on the brakes, I have the clutch in, and then the engine cuts off. It starts easily again, but still...not ideal. Occasionally it stays running (through a stop sign, etc), but then the engine starts searching. (I think thats the word for it- the idle drops to 500, jumps to 1500, and repeats.)

I went to fill the tank, and it only took about 3 gallons, so there is 13 gallons of old gas- could that be my problem, or adding to it??

What is causing my problems?

PS The body on my car is OK-ish (some rust on the bottom of the doors, a fair bit on the underside), and the car is COMPLETELY gutted. How hard would it be to put my engine in a new body? Does the body have to be from an SE fb, or can it be a carbeurated 1st gen? And how hard is it to do a transmission swap? What kind of tools would I need?

I know that's a lot of questions, any advice is appreciated, thanks guys!

This is an inherent issue with the SE and there is way too much to list for you. That is why there are thread links in the FAQ forum for this problem.

You need to read all of the threads that are in the below mentioned title and perform the tests that are listed. :-)

My GSL-SE has idle and surging problems, how can I fix it?

Ah, thank you. I thought I looked carefully, but I missed that the first time. I will read that stuff over, and come back with crazy problems!!

I had a similar problem recently i thought it was just the gslse being a pain but, then my ignitor went bad, it completely stopped firing on my rear rotor. If you get a chance pull the plugs and have someone crank it while its grounded and make sure youre getting a good spark. I would suggest holding the plug with some rubber handled pliers unless you want a nice shock.

Well, theres a lot to answer but lets see if I can help.
First off, as rx7doctor stated theres a list of things that can cause your problem. Vaccuum leak or intake leak comes to mind to me first. I'd start there personally. Get the bad gas out of the car. Run it out or dump it out, the choice is yours. But fixing a car with running problems with a tank full of bad gas is like fixing your roof in a hurricane to me personally.

As far as the body goes, there are several differences between the se and the other cars, I'd suggest searching this forum cause I honestly cant list em all.
Lastly, what kind of tranny swap are you referring to cause theres a number of options available.
