idle compensator
what is the purpose of the idle compensator? if it is disabled when people remove their rats nest then it must not be that important.

ok so the idle compensator isnt necessary....but what is it supposed to do - i know the valve opens to let air in when the engine has warmed up but where does the air go and why?

I'm gonna stab a guess at it, so beware of possible flying BS:
The car doesn't run the same when it's warm as when it's cold, we all know this. There is a "hot-start assist" to help it start when warmed, and a "sub-zero fluid" to help it start when it's cold. There's an "altitude compensator" I believe, which is used for making your car run right at different altitudes....
So my guess is that the idle compensator kicks in when your engine is warmed up to make sure you still idle at a nice low 750rpm.
Anyone else wanna take a crack at it?
Jon

All I know is if the idle compensator hose is unhooked at any engine temperature on my '79, the car doesn't want to idle and is hard to launch in 1st. Connect or plug the hose, and it runs fine.
Sometimes I wonder if Mazda didn't just throw some **** on that carb for no other reason but to make it hard to work on.
