Seriously, 88 MR2s are terrible. I would rather have a second Gen. UUGHH.

The 88 MR2 SC is a great car. They're light and nimble, plus they get great gas mileage. The MR2 is a great autocrosser and a very forgiving car to drive hard. Toyota 4 bangers are typically as bullet-proof as a 12A rotary, though they have their problems that I'll outline below. Also, if you think your RX-7 has rust problems, buy an 80's Toyota. They're pretty rank, though they were getting better by the late 80's. Check the wheel wells for rust. Another thing to look for is oil burning. The 4AG series is notorious for bad piston rings, and typically blow oil out the exhaust on hard acceleration. They also can leak something fierce out of the spark plug holes on the valve cover. Of course, the motor can still do that and run like a top for thousands upon thousands of miles.

If you can't find a good condition RX-7 in your area, the MR2 is a great car to have. Plus there's a great community on the net for the MR2 that is every bit as civilized as the SA/FB community here at www.rx7club.com. Definately check the car out, but keep looking for another SA/FB.

The MR2 is a great ladies car, easy to drive. I nearly bought one for my daughter before deciding on the Honda CRX with the 160hp vtec engine. Both have fuel consumptions suitable for a students budget and relatively cheap mechanical parts.
