i wanna shoot flames
ok i got an 84GSL-SE and i want mine to shoot flames!! my old SA had dellorto carbs and rb intake and headers with a straight thru exhause and coffee can muffler! everytime i shift gears that baby would blow flames..... but this one which is FI and still got all the cats doesnt. i took the old stock muffler off(looks like a bbq smoker!!!) and installed straight pipe with a tip. she sounds great but im thinking of eliminating the cats and thermal..... what do u all think?

This.
To the OP: Why do you want your car to shoot flames? There is absolutely no performance benefit to shooting flames. The only time my car will let a flame go is after I shut her down after a hard drive.
And if you go complete straight pipe, get ready for some hearing loss. That will be loud as hell.

I wanna shoot flames cuz its friggin awesome!! call me a ricer if u want, but my old SA was cool as hell shooting flames everytime i shift gears! i like it.... plus a free flowing exhaust is not a bad thing..... gonna try and eliminate the thermal reactor, stock exhaust manifold and both the cats... gonna throw an rb header on it and maybe a race cat and then straight pipe it the rest of the way out! but i heard its hard to do with a GSL-SE..... any ideas?

SE has 2 pre-cats and one main cat then a muffler. No thermal reactor.
Again my car is racing beat header into a straight-through muffler, through more 2.25'' piping to a dump tip muffler, also straight-through. I can take it to redline in 3rd gear and let off. Maybe a burble but not so much as a bang as far as backfires. S3 engines do not have enough fuel to produce flames. If you put a carb on it, it probably would.

My exhaust at the time was RB header, 2.5" exhaust with a Borla ProXS as a presilencer and a Mazdaspeed muffler at the rear. Stockport 12a, OER 45 (I call them oreo) and side draft manifold. Just tuned it really rich. Like REALLY rich. I probably could have ran a big street port with the jets I had in it. It is in the description.
The 2nd video was with the tuning on the carb about 95% spot on. It was a real hoot to drive. Now I have a boost prepped Weber 45 (Thanks rotaryshack! Shameless plug) waiting to get fired up.

Rockin an '84 GSL-SE with a straight back exhaust to a fart can with a stock manifold, Dellorto Carb and MSD and that as I've been told by friends the fire it does shoot is about 3 feet long and about 1 foot in diameter and backing off in 3rd above 5,000 makes it sound like a gunshot, below that its just some nice popping sounds and thats when I shoot the big stuff....I'll have to get a vid or pics at some point, cant wait till I get headers.

the thermal reactor was only on 79-80 cars and it was used with the air incection system to bake the exhaust emissions clean. 81 introduced the first converter setup.
and shooting flames can be dangerious and if you value your rear bumper or 7, constantly shooting flames can start the rear bumper on fire and burn you to the ground.

I've been told that mine will spit some modest flames when I let off at high rpms. Not anything I've been trying for, but still looks pretty cool at times.

With your car alone, most likely no, but since you don't mind if they call you ricer then go all out and just get the flamthrower exhaust, it comes with a module for flame control and distance. You can get up to like 5 feet of flames. Search it on google. It pretty cool if you don't mind the ricer look

Running on the track without my engine properly tuned, I was told that I was not shooting flames, but that I had a steady 4' flame out the back. The entire car smelled like gas and my brand new silver stainless steel exhaust is now golden--which matches nicely with my wheels.
Back to OP's question, swap in some larger secondary ingectors so that it runs rich under load. That should do it. If that fails, mount a spark plug...
