Notice that it brightens aluminum! I'm serious- It works very well and no fear of damage! Use it full strength in a spray bottle..Use plain white vinegar..It is also CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!!

Huh. Certainly cheap enough to try out.
I just ordered some P21S, but I'll give the vinegar a whirl, just for kicks.

I spray with castrol super clean, let is sit 2-3 minutes, then scrub with a nylon brush. on filthy wheels it takes a few applications but does the trick. my gf's EAGLE wheels on the Geo Metro now look pretty good considering she never cleans them.

I suppose you could re-apply a clearcoat, but why? Just use this product when the wheels get funky. They don't oxidize very fast unless maybe you have lots of acid rain or something. Here in Oregon, MOLD is more of a problem, and the etching mag wheel cleaner does a fabulous job on it.

Maybe it was industrial HVAC Coil cleaner? That stuff eats thru some grime.

I doubt the acid is hydrofloric, that stuff is just too dangerous to not be a controlled substance. Just getting it all over your hand is enough to kill you. Exposed body parts are just amputated. Exposure to the lungs would kill you in minutes. The stuff is nasty because it attacks the bones, decalcifying them, as well as the brain. Typically hydrofloric is only used in clean rooms, to etch glass, often for making microchips.

I'd belive muritic (hydrocloric) acid, because it is often used as an industrial cleaner.
