I want to remove the center link from both tie rods to remove surface rust and paint he center link. The Haynes manual says to support the car with jack stands. My question is I already have the car supported on car ramps I drove up on can I safely remove the center link just using the support of the ramps or will car collapse killing me and putting an end to the project.
Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Center LinK? Not sure what this is.

 

Ramps will work fine. The only real advantage to jack stands is you can move the steering linkage side to side, which may help get to a couple of the nuts easier.

 

Think that's the crossbar that you have to drop to pull the oil pan.

Edit: After re-reading, I'm not sure what Tuna meant.

 

I am assuming they were talking about the center steering link. Although, they could have been refering to the adjusting sleeve.

 

Yeah, that's what confused me after I re-read it.

 

The best way I can discribe the center link is it is the bar that spans between the wheels connecting both tie rods, you would have to remove it to drop the oil pan. The manual says disconnect the center link, both tie-rods and the Pitman arm and the idler arm using a puller. Just trying to be safe.
