I just saw the second most beautiful rotary powered car, IMO

Just putting this here 'cause the first gen forum has the most "well rounded" people.

I was on my way the Home Depot to get some aluminized tape while at the stop light before my turn I see about six cars ahead of me a small orange car with four round tail lights. I think it's a Rx-3, so I follow the guy hoping he'll stop so I can talk to him. After a few miles he pulls in to a gas station. The guy has to be aproching his mid 40s.

Me: Hey, don't mean to bother you, but that's a sweat car. Is it a Rx-3?

Him: ??How do you know about Rx-3's? (him looking at me strange because I'm young ((22)) and know a little about old school Japaness iron) Ah, but no, it's a Rx-2.

Me: I have an old first gen Rx-7 and I like to know its roots, so what year is it?

Him: '73, why did you want to buy it?

Me: I wish I had the money, but how much would you sell it for?

Him: about $5k, but I wont sell it unless worse comes to worse

Me: (laughfs) I think it would be worth it, let me let you pump your gas, nice talking with you.

If I had $5k and if he would sell it, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Does anyone know of any good Rx-2 sites out there?

There's heaps (well, enough) RX-2s and 3s and 4s in Australia. They usually end up having 13bs and 13bTs put in them.

Head over to www.ausrotary.com and search - there's heaps of stuff, pics etc.

For example

And a long-ish thread on how to identify the various series RX-2s around.

A spotters guide prepared by Broomy (from the AusRotary) on the RX-2: http://www.planetspeedy.com/broomy/rx2models/rx2.htm

And, yes, they are very pretty. Was it a coupe or a 4 door? The coupe is the prettier of the two but they are quite rare. There are heaps of piston-powered ones around too, but they were called Capellas here and, 606/616 in the 'States.

I was looking at an old Mazda 1200 today. In rotary form, the car was the R100. If I could scrape together the cash, I'd buy the sucker and a 12A. Then I'd have a neato-keen retro rotary four door sedan.

It came out a Cosmo, so I figured it would go back into one. An RX-5 style Cosmo that is.

I chose this car because it's 98% straight, clean in and out, sat since '91 but a still runs, engine bay is huge, and the Cosmo name just screams 20B. I think this will be a great first 20B project. I've been collecting the stuff I'll need to perform the swap for a while now. My next project will be a white FC with all the bells and whistles.

Just waiting for it to get here...

Actually, my very first 20B project will be an REPU. Then, once all the bugs are worked out, I'll put one in the Cosmo. It runs perfectly and fired up within the first second of cranking after sitting since last sept. I was in total shock/disbelief. It might still have a slow acc pump, but it's on the low setting; Hitachi carbs have two pump shot settings, but anyway, it didn't have that prob when I drove it this time. Maybe it's telling me to not mess with a good thing? Whatever, heheh. The REPU can barely get out of its own way. 20B time!

Sorry to get the thread so off-topic. Just gotta say the 20B is confirmed to arrive on Monday.

I wish I could find a REPU for sale somewhere near me... I'd buy it in a heartbeat and turn it into such a cool track car...

Actually 13B-RE but close enough. The REW only came in the FD's.

But I dunno about the RX-2 man. My dad used to have one and although I apreciate them being part of my roots, i dont care for their looks. None of mazda's 70's cars (except the SA) really ever looked that good to me, the RX-2 and 3 have sort of a "scrunched muscle car" look to them.

How ever I'd much rather have an RX-2 3, 4, 5 (cosmo), repu than an R100. Those things were awfull.

But if I had 5k to blow, the RX-2 would make a nice collectors item.
