Well... a few of the companies didn't have a model year limitation, like Grundy. Too bad they are ****** about the whole Mazda thing. What, my car has to be italian to be collectable! WTF!

Buy a few Italian cars and Grundy will probably insure the Mazda too along with them--regardless of the year, LOL. (I'm serious--it's up to the underwriter.) Otherwise, here are a few others you can try:

Acorida Insurance Services, (800) 648-1600

American Collectors Insurance, (800) 360-2277 http://www.americancollectorsins.com/

Condon & Skelly, (800) 257-9496 http://www.condonskelly.com/

The Gorsline Company, (800) 805-0034 http://www.gorsline.com/

Great American Classic Collectors http://www.classiccollectors.com/ or http://www.classicins.com/

Grundy Worldwide, (800) 338-4005 http://www.grundy.com/

Hagerty Classic Insurance, (800) 922-4050 http://www.hagerty.com/

my 84SE cost me $324/6months, which is half of what my other insurer was charging me last year.. My insurance agency got rates with progressive, which is what i have now.. that's just for liability though, but being 19 and in my own name i thought i was doing alright.

I know this thread is extremely old, but I too tried Grundy yesterday in an attempt to get my '93 FD insured. All the guy said on the phone quote was "Sorry, we don't insure Mazda's." To which I replied, "so, if I have a 1967 Cosmo Sport 110s, you won't insure it because it's a Mazda?" He replied that Mazda's were currently not on their list of "collectible" cars. Yet, in an earlier post to this thread I can clearly see that at least one Gen 1 owner has been successful in insuring his vehicle with them. I'll try sending an email to them to see if I can get a clear cut answer as to the criteria they use in determining "collectible" or "noncollctible" status.

A 93 is not a collectable car! Is it a show car? Do you drive it daily? If you drive it daily, no way then.

They won't do a 1st gen by itself either. I suspect you need other cars on the policy to get a Japanese car insured with them. Hagerty is compeditively priced against Grundy anyway.

In general, specialty insurance is for vehicles other than daily drivers. There are various plans and criteria, but the manufacturer or model year alone are not the only factors, and underwriters can make exceptions, depending on the circumstances. Did you check out any other companies in that list I posted previously? Leland West will insure even new cars.

Since I already had other cars insured through Grundy, they just added the RX-7s to the policy. They would even have taken a 1994 E31 (BMW 8-series) but I used another company instead.

The reason I had the Grundy policy was because Hagerty told me they would not insure any vehicles garaged at my house, even though they already covered some stored elsewhere. Strangely enough the last time I talked to Hagerty, they seemed interested in covering those cars after all. So they can all be flexible with their own rules if they think there is money to be made.

Good luck.

My dad agreed to pay my insurance until I finished paying off my 2 cars, which I did, and he gave me until mid-June to work something out. Since I'm 17 do I have to be on my parents policy, or can I get my own?

I don't know if my $8.00/hour salary can handle insurance for a daily driver RX-7 while working on one that doesn't run Then again, I know absolutely nothing about insurance rates, except that mine are going to be expensive.

John64,

I think the argument could be made that Gen 3s are collectible based on their limited U.S. production numbers, unique rotary engine, and (in my case) extremely rare OEM color (CYM). My car is only driven a couple times each month, mainly for local car club outings. If it were bone stock it would definitely be collectible, since we know just how FEW of those still exist . Personally, I think the criteria should be "a vehicle of known special interest" and "a limited use, non daily-driven vehicle" that's it.

If my Gen 3 were a Ferrari or a 911 Porsche, it would probably qualify as collectible, even though far more 911s (at least) were sold in the U.S. in 1993 than Gen 3 RX-7s. I'm just trying to get Grundy to give me an honest answer as to the criteria used in determining eligibility for coverage. Is a Buick Grand National eligible for coverage? I'm not sure. It would be nice if they had a current online listing of vehicle makes, models, and quantities that are currently insured through them.

I sent an email this afternoon. I'll let everyone know tomorrow what they had to say.
