I just can't get it to work (please help)
I got my dashkit and wiring harness from crutchfield today so I could install my cd player. After hours trying to get it to work I can't even get the cd player to turn on, yes I tested the cd player and it works I just can't get it to work in the fb. I never had installed a cd player and such a old vehicle and am really having problems. First of all only 3 of the connecters they gave me match up. 1 of them for the speakers doesn't have a place to connect into. Can someone please help me out here. It's a 1985 gs. The only thing I just remembered I forgot to try was having the radio connecter thingy plugged into the back of the cd player. Also when I try to put the kit up to screw in it's to big and I can't even get the fricken thing in. This is a nightmare i kind've wish i wouldn't have done it because ihave to drive this car to work tomorrow and it's kindv'e hard with everything laying there so any quick answers, thanks.

Okay... Im confused...
You should have the connector at then end of the vehicle's wiring harness. That connector plugged into the stock stereo right?
Crutchfield should have supplied a connector that plugs into the stock vehicle wiring harness, with a bunch of unterminated wires on the other end. Your CD player should have come with something similar, that plugs into the back of the new deck.
Was all that supplied?
If it was, each connection has to be properly made. 12v constant from the car to 12v constant into the CD player. 12v ign switched to 12v ign switched and so on.
If you have wired the 2 harnesses together properly (with good connections, please don't tell me you used wire nuts, you should crimp, solder and heatshrink each connector) then everything should work.

I know how each thing is supposed to connect to each other. I am telling you one of them doesn't. Their was 4 that came with this here look http://www.crutchfield.com/S-lETw2lq...sp?i=120705003 Now the white/gray or purple/green doesn't match up because I am missing one of them to connect to so what am I to do? Also I can't ge this dang thing to even turn on please help. Where should I ground to and is the antenna thing needed to make it turn on?

Okay... the white/grey/purple/green ones go to your speakers IIRC... shouldn't keep the deck from powering up...
Do you have switched 12v going to the deck? You can find this out with a test light or a multimeter... should be no power when the ignition is off, and power when on.
Do you have constant 12v going to the deck? The constant is for memory functions, this should be on all the time... or everytime you shut off the ignition, the stereo will lose its memory.
As for a ground... I don't see any wiring for that... perhaps the radio's chassis has to be in contact with the vehicle's ground in order for it to work.

hmm...check the fuse on it, also i had the same problem had to tie into the headlight up switch below the radio, the middle one will give you power, i believe its green/white, on a fairly large harness. then plug the acc into the stock one (red wire), i didnt buy a harness just did my own quick connects as i ran new wires and speakers too.

FB radio wiring 101
ok man, the new stereo has an orange wire on it labeled "illumination" tap this wire into one of the lights in the center console. I've found that the ashtray light works just fine. As for your ground. you should still be using the factory basket to mount the deck( the metal casing that holds the whole thing) just use an eyelet on your ground wire and put it on there. This will assure a good solid ground connection. Also, if there is absolutely NO display on the deck at all, it is not an illumination problem. The only thing the illumination controls on the deck is to dim it slightly when you turn on the vehicle lights.Lastly if you previously had the "premium sound package" (the one that utilizes 2 factory amps located under and in front of the rear storage bins) then you need to disconnect the clips on the one behind the driver side and that is the plug for your rear speakers. HTH.

well, first off i would try to see why the deck ddisplay isn't working. second, did your rx come with the "premium sound" package? If it did, you would have a radio, tape deck, and eq. IF it did your amps are in the rear. to access these, you must pull out the storage compartment. After you pull out the cubby, look for a Blue plug going into a little amp. thats the one for your rear speakers.

Yeah I had the radio, tape deck and eq. So I am going to have to run a wire from the rear cubby area up to the HU? How the hell do I do that? Sorry I am not very good with audio. Also I don't have a blown fuse or anything on my cd player I checked that already. I just can't figure out my the display won't work. It works on my other car but not on this one. This sucks so much. ALso the crutchfield dash kit I got doesn't even fit how the hell am I supposed to get it to even bolt up man I don't even know what to do here.

radio ground chassis-
Radio illumination Red/black+
LF speaker+/- Lt.green/red-lt green/black

i've noticed almost every time that i've put in a new deck that i've had to hold the power button on the deck to turn it on. same as if you were to turn it off, hopfully you've tried that. when you're trying to get the deck to turn on are you turning your key to the ACC position? my only thoughts for the display not working would be would be that you've blown a fuse to the ACC wire of the deck. Check your fuse box under the dash for that puppy, or check your voltages to your acc and constant. Trying to remember if the constant will kick out the cd or not without the ACC?

Also make sure to recheck your Ground wire( if your not getting it from the chassis)B/C most people using a test light or meter Use the parking light wire(illumination) by mistake B/C it shows (-12V) when lights are off And (+12V) when lights are on

1. The above diagram connections are viewied from the side the wire goes in, IIRC
2. It wouldn't be an error in the ACC. wire as the deck needs BOTH acc. and batt. hooked up to get power.
3. 84-85 and 86-91 wiring is coded differently.

try it shadow, put a cd in your HU, unplug your acc wire and the constant wire so it resets the memory, then just reconnect the constant only and it should make noise and kick out the cd. what else would explain him having these same symptoms and have no display if it's working on another car.
now that i think about it do you have your ILL wire hooked up? i know alot of decks get funky when they hook that wire up. if it is, unhook and try it without

You guys are putting way to much thought in this. Just run your own power and ground and and constant wire and hook up your speakers. This way you only need to find the power antenna wire and hook it up. Use your fuse box for your switched power and run your constant wire to the clock in the fuse box.

Sorry to sound like such a rook but I don't know much about audio and I don't know how to go about doing these things you guys are talking about. This is the reason I bought the wire harness because I thought it would be easy just connecting those wires and snaping the wire harness things togeather. I am so confused it isn't even funny I just want to get my cd player working today without having to dish out so much extra money for someone else to do it.
