I have an annoying odd whining noise?!?...

...But then my girlfriend goes home....

Na, but really, I have a '79 12a bridgeport with a 5spd manual and it also makes a whining noise. Its in first and second mainly, and in the higher revs, it sounds like its in the front of the gearbox/clutch/flywheel area. Its a very metallic sound almost like thin metal rubbing very lighty on the flywheel as it spins. Also, the other day i discovered there were no bolts in my rear gearbox mount, the mount was there but not bolted to the box. so i bolted it up, BUT, I had to redrill holes in the bracket, cos they wouldn't line up. Is there ment to be a mount or spacer that goes between the g/box and the rear bracket going across the tunnel? cos i dont have one, maybe my trans is sitting low causing odd noises?? thats what I'd thought of so far anyway.....

anyone have any idea's maybe?

Sounds like it could be bearing noise. Got pics of the bracket and how you got it attached to the tranny? There should be a bracket held to the tranny with 2 bolts. From that bracket, there are 2 studs that go into the crossmember, and 2 nuts on the studs. Then the crossmember is held to the car with 2 bolts.

ah huh, I have the crossmember bolted DIRECTLY to the transmission casing. 2 bolts, through crossmember from underneath into bolt holes in g/box.

Makes purfect sense. You need the spacer bracket thingy. Time to hit the J-yard. Good luck, and hope that fixes the noise. If not, inspect the clutch, throw out bearing, and pilot bearing for damage from the transmission not being aligned properly. If that doesn't fix it, go back to the scrap yard, find the car you robbed the spacer bracket from, and grap the whole tranny. I doubt there is enough stress on the tranny input shaft to damage the internal bearings, but it is possible.

My tranny did the whining noise in all gears except 4th, so I figured it was time to replace... put a new (used) one in from the junker's, and it solved my problems!

You can get that rubber "spacer" piece prom Schucks new for $30. Ask me how I know . I had to replace one that was actually in about 6 pieces when it came outta the car. It was a wonder it was still in there to begin with. After I did my engine swap and went to put the tranny crossmember in so I could take it off the jack, I noticed this thing missing so I just set the tranny on a small block of wood in there to make up the lack of size difference until I could get to the store to get a new one.
