I GOT LSD!!!!!!!!! now I have a few questions. (mostly brake related.

Well I receantly bought a running GSL, and decided to strip off all the parts I want, Swap them with my GS and sell it......

Well I did my rear end swap yesterday, and HOLY **** does my car stop!

But my question is, how in the hell do I get the rear calipers to retract so I can put in new pads?!?!

Also what RPM's are everyone launching at with the LSD?? Before, with the open diff I was launching at around 3500, and had very nice results consistantly.
Now I dump the clutch at 4000 and it bogs the motor a little......
I do have big oll BfGoodrich g/force KD's on the back..... so they stick pretty well......
Any help would be great

Thanks Micah

Goto your auto parts store. There's a special tool you use, shaped like a little cube, about 1 inch long on the sides... It has squares in the side to accept a 3/8 inch ratchet and little bumps on each side. It costs like $20 at the most.

Look at the piston on the caliper... See how it has little dents? Match the dents to the bumps and turn the piston. (It may help to open the bleeder.)

Alternatively, if you need to do it NOW, use needle nose pliers in the dents and put a wrench on the pivot point of the pliers.

you can rent the rear disk brake tool kit from autozone. otherwise, buy it from harbor freight . You will only use it twice a year and if it breaks, who cares, its only $19.

I just purchased an LSD, but it's on it's not here yet....

Are the rear calipers on it that much different from every other caliper I've ever seen, including on my explorer with discs all around? I just use a C-clamp to push the pistons back when I do brakes...

Front brakes you use a C-Clamp for, rears you need the tool, or can use pliers.

hey, on the front brakes of a 85 w/ a 4x114.3 bolt patern, what, if any, is the difference in the disc size, cuz I got a new rear and I want to be able to have the same pattern all the way around, so I was thinking about redrilling the front.

How's the parking brake done on that Exploder? I'll bet you $100 that once you remove the disc, there's two shoes and the inside of the disc, acts like a drum brake...

I know because I've worked on them before.

On our RX-7's, the parking brake is a screw inside the caliper, As you yank the parking brake lever, it turns the screw and pushes the piston out.

As the pads wear out, the piston moves further out on the screw.

You need to turn the piston backwards on the screw to push it back in.

Those front brake are off of a GSL-SE... I wouldn't redrill them, I'd upgrade the brakes all around, by replacing the rear axle with an SE one...

THe main reason people upgrade is to trash the drums for discs... The SE has bigger discs... The GSL also has discs, but they're smaller... The do, however have the same bolt pattern as your 83 does..

That is what I thought, thanks, and it is a GSL rear going into an 83, I don't have the fronts, but if the bolt pattern is the same there shouldn't be a problem.
