I got 31 mpg
I don't know if anybody cares, but I am really glad my car finally got god gas mileage. I got this by driving on the interstate and going about 65-70 the whole way. I usually get about 17 in the city so I am glad I finally got good gas mileage. I love my seven!!
A stock car in tune cruising on a freeway at 60mph will achieve 32-34mpg, consumption rapidly rises above that speed or with acceleration. The rotary is basically efficient but has a steep fuel consumption curve.
whoa...
Nice numbers to get! Hey Paul, are those figures for any car or just the FB? And why does consumption increase past that speed?
60 seems slow. In the Bay Area, people regularly do 75-85...
Of course I drive the speed limit. =)

Fuel consumpion increases with speed due to air resistance. The consumption rate curve is fairly flat from 40-60mph then rises rapidly. I once did a test of 30 minutes at 90mph and my consumption dropped to 20-21 mpg from 28 at 65mph. A practical test on a flat straight road on cruise control. Slightly over the speed limit on a day the police do not patrol that road!

680rwhp12A- I have a lovely test track a 180 mile stretch of highway almost dead straight and flat with very little traffic, one car every hour!. Its the Silver City Highway south of Broken Hill in New South Wales. Australia. The tecnique is to run at a set speed for 30 minutes then tip up your tank from a can. This way you can get a very accurate measure of fuel consumption.
What amazes me is the very wide range of fuel consumptions on Gen 1s. Your experience is one of the heavist reported, but I have a friend with a ported 13BT who only gets 6mpg round town.
As a matter of interet I have tried premium petrol [98 oct] and get only about 2% fall in consumption. Driving a piston engined car I get about 7% more miles which makes it economical.

man.... 31mpg.... i envy you, i get like 10mpg right now....
driving my rex is almost the same in gas as driving my 76 gmc 350ci.... and the gmc is funner to drive because it is a stick and my rex is an automatic... i hope to have my seven a stick soon...
well congrats on the gas mileage....
oh BTW.. my car is all stock with a k&n filter and im getting 10-11 mpg.... anyone know how i could get better mileage...
im thinking... fix my timing, fix MINOR exhaust leaks, tune/rebuild carby, and new plug wires...
you think this will make a difference?

dont dis on me because of my "repairs" list. but i dont think the obvious things would decrease gas mileage (exhaust leak) thats the only obvious thing the others are assumptions...

How much gas is used from the on choke warm up stage on 12a's???? It seems to dump alot of fuel into the engine when cold. If you drive short trips several times a day, that would add up. And do exhaust leaks hurt performance? I have one before the cat (need to get that gasket).
Hmm, my poorly tuned 186k mile 12A gets about 24 mpg hwy. Just changed all the fluids (oil, redline in tranny, amsoil in diff), guess I should give it a tune-up before I make the 8 hour trip to New Orleans this weekend, and inflate the tires up a tad. I'm hoping to average a bit over 25mpg for the trip with the cruise on!
It NEEDS a new cap and rotor, guess I'll have to pony up the bucks.
At least the plugs are new...

Paul Fitzwarryne - 98 Octane? Jeezus! The highest available here is 92 at most stations, or 94 at Petro Canada (they add stuff to their fuel). Besides, with that other thread on octane for the rotary, I'm not going to put anything but regular in mine from now on. Who woulda thunk it - a sports car that demands *low* octane fuel... hehe... I'm so laughing in the faces of the Eagle Talon and Honda CRX Jim and Gates (my friends) have

98 Octane in AU, in Europe, and perhaps elsewhere only use the RON (research octane number) whereas in North America we us the (RON+MON)/2 method. MON (motor octane number) is a different method of testing octane, designed to be closer to a typical engine. the difference between the two show how engine combustion chamber geometry affect the number.
In general MON is abou 7-10 less than RON for typical pump gas, so 98 in AU is about the same as 93-94 in the US.

There is something different about a rotary and piston engined car. A worn V8 tends to use oil rather than have a significant increase in fuel consumption. Out of tune rotaries love fuel. Gregs response above is typical, 10-11 mpg
NOTE. the offical consumption for a 1993 FD with twin rotors is 17 mpg city and 25mpg highway, and look at all the extra weight they carry!
I have a theory, as the 1 gen engines wear out drivers still expect the same performance from theie **** dyno. The get it by using higher revs, lower gears. the result is fuel consumption goes up like a rocket that even putting on a new K&N filter will not stop.
Thats my $20 worth- consultants dont come cheap!

Wouldn't it be 88-91 octane here?
I think we have 87-91-93 octanes.

Man you guys are posting some damn fine results. I can top them all though. Over 35mpg. How you ask? Easy, secondaries stuck closed... just expect to get passed by everyting on the road.
Otherwise, I cannot remember obtaining over 20mpg! I never drove nice though.
