New Mini is not so Mini at all, and uses some BMW stuff. Overhere in Belgium there's racecar Mini. It's actually a tubeframed car using Mini body and M3 engine.
The new Mini is rather large, so don't know if the gearbox would fit.

Its that SUV styling that the designers think people like. For instance, take the Pontiac Aztec, a real FUGLY monster. As for the Transam, I had a 87 TA, and while I liked the car, it wasn't my ideal....but yeah, good point! Why are they making these enviro cars total blunt bodies and not streamlined and aerodynamic?

Because streamlined cars like the Honda Insight and GM Impact rotted in showrooms, whereas soccermoms seem to love the brute-ute styling
