Unhappy Huge Power Loss

I own an '84 GS with 285,000 original miles on the body, and tranny. The engine only has about 60,000 on it.

My problem.

I needed to pass someone today so, I stepped on it. All the way to the floor.

No power. It felt like I was playing with my '73 VW Bug.

It takes forever to run through the low, and high RPM band. Even when shifting at 6,500rpm and shifting into 2nd, I get the kick from the torque when I go into the fresh gear at 5,000rpm but then the power is sapped almost immediately.

I've noticed in the past week or so that when I stand on it, I'd have a lack of power. That was once in a blue moon. Now I NEVER have power. This all happened about two hours ago.

My father said that the clutch could be slipping. I don't know about that because when I inherited the car from my brother, he said he had put in a brand new clutch not too long ago. And it's not the trans because I experience power loss in every gear.

I haven't checked my plugs yet but, they are fairly new as well.

Please Help.

If you still have cats, they could be clogged

My cat is clogged? I don't know if that would do it...

It's strange. It almost feels like the clutch is slipping. I drove it around a bit more... Maybe I glazed it?

Please keep the comments flowing, I need to know what's wrong with this thing.

Your RPM's would shoot to the sky if the clutch were slipping.
Clogged cat or fuel problem - have you checked your flow (or filter)?

Rather than making guesses, and changing out cats and **** that you might not need to, I would recommend that you start with the basic things that you can verify for free or the really cheap things that are known to go bad and cause issues like this (and are due to be changed out anyway).

1. Change your fuel filter.
2. Verify that you have spark on the leading plugs.
3. Air filter.
4. Cap and rotor.
5. Make sure that the Teeter Totter is hooked up correctly on the carb linkage.
6. Check for vacuum leaks.

If the clutch was slipping, then you would get an increase in rpms without an increase in speed.

Does it rev freely to the redline when sitting in the driveway? Does the exhaust seem to be flowing freely when you do this?

Good luck..
