How I blew my engine. Actually it happened to my wife, not me. But it's all the same because we pool our financial resources:

Exactly one day after we got the car out of the shop with a transmission/ clutch overhaul she was on her way to work when the engine cratered. The car is worth a maximum of $2500 on a good day, so the trans and clutch job was barely worth the bother at $1600 parts&labor. Now we had to chase money with money by spending another $1600 for an engine replacement, and then run the car for at least another three years without major failures to get our moneys' worth.

The good news? It was not an RX7, but a useless boinger of a '91 Nissan Sentra XE with over 200K on the odometer. Otherwise I'd have done the work myself.

BTW, it threw a con rod through both sides of the block--- no oil burning or other warnings of any kind. If we could have known (before the transmission failure) that the engine was going to immediately follow the transmission down the garden path to hell we'd have sold tickets to anybody who wanted to watch us set it on fire and push it off a cliff.

Here's the factors... you do the math.

Junkyard motor with 250K+ miles on it
Bad oil seals
Untuned Weber 48IDA
Lunatic driver/owner
45 minute drift run
Lunatic driver/owner who can't understand what a rev limiter is
