how to remove horn pad

Hello all,

Somehow I accidentally must have banged the horn pad on the steering wheel and now it is raised on one side. This was causing the horn to sound intermittantly so I disconnected the horn wires and am trying to figure out how to remove the pad and fix the problem. I assume it either pulls straight out or must be slightly turned then pulled. I tried gently doing both with no results. Am afraid to apply too much force as I am concerned about breaking something. The FSM is no help. The car is an 84 SE. Are the steering wheels different on an SE?

Can someone tell me how to do this? A digital photo would be helpful.

TIA.

I am not completely sure on your 84, but on all the earlier ones, you just pull it off...I was worried about hurting mine too when I Changed out my steering wheel...

On both my '83 and my 85 GSL-SE the pads are rubber - I just grab on one side and pull and it pops right off - slips on easily to reinstall, too.

The horn may be sounding irratically because the contacts are making contact with the metal plate that holds the rubber 'horn cap' on. I would imagine that by simply removing the horn cap and replacing it in the correct fashion would solve the problem.

Thanks. all. Tomorrow I'll just try to pull it straight off.

Nick-7,

Bought mine new in Jan, 1984. Aside from normal maintenance have not had many problems. Only the oil cooler, a suspension bushing and the master and slave clutch cylinders. The car has 58K miles, runs fine with only a small amount of smoke at startup. Also, the AC blows cold air. After 18 years charged in some Freon a couple of weeks ago. Since it wasn't leaking decided not to convert to R134 yet.

How is yours and what has gone wrong? I was wondering what the service life of the factory alternator, starter and fuel pump were. How is your clutch and AC?
