How much is an 85 GSL-SE worth?

I'm looking at a 1985 GSL-SEand was just wondering how much it is worth. Basically it needs:

-new passenger side front fender
-new passenger side headlight assembly
-new front center piece between headlights
-new front bumper
-new rear bumper
-new drivers side tail light
-new paint job
-some interior parts
-oil leak fixed
-new battery
-other small engine parts like air cleaner box.

I was going to offer the guy $700 Canadian for it. Is this a good price if the car has been sitting for about a year?

If you get the car, let me know, i'll be able to get you the headlight assembly, rear bumper, air cleaner box, and probably a few other things you may need.

I paid $200 Canadian for my '79 GS

it needed

Driver's side glass
Gas Tank
Misc. Interior parts
Headlights
side and front markers
master brake cylinder

$700 canadian sounds decent for an '85 GSL-SE in the shape you describe, but you could get a better deal.

Offer the guy $400

It might help that I mention that the guy is asking 1700 for it, and it is at a dealer.

ohhh, $1700? You said in your first post $700 Canadian?

it's definately not worth $1700

There was an '84 GSL-SE here for $1500, had a good engine, new exhaust, paint was good, interior was good, only needed minor things like a shifter **** and a sunroof....

I beleive i said I was going to offer the dealer $700 for it as opposed to the $1700 he was asking. I think it will go for that because I have kept up on it, and all the cars that sat around it when I first looked at it are now gone. Even a 1989? ford probe with a rusted out door that had a $500 sticker in the window is gone.

Well, after having no luck in starting the car today, I have not offered any money. Nobody has even looked at the car for at least a month or so. Anyway, since the battery is dead, We had to boost the car with another car (their battery booster was dead). After cranking for what seemed like hours (actually 10 minutes), my guess is that it flooded. With the way the guy was pumping the gas, its no wonder why it flooded.

I AM going to test drive the car before I put an offer on it. But to do that, it needs to start. If it never starts, the most he would get out of me is $400, but it wouldn't be worth it because I am on a tight budget here. I dont have the money to rebuild the engine nor do I have the facilities.

One thing that concerns me is the fact that the rear hatch won't open. Is this because it doesn't have any power from the battery? Not even the hatch release button will work. Do you still need power to the hatch to open it even with the key? I'm thinking the lock cylinder is screwed.

I'm going tomorrow to take a few pics of the car to post.
I think $600 is a good amount at this point in time. Most I will go up to is $800.

The rear hatch has a power solenoid to pop it up. No power, no hatch.

For all you have to do to it you might want to look into a better example of an SE.

No can do with looking at a better one. RX-7's around these parts are few and far between. This is the best first gen I have come accross.

I'd consider looking elsewhere in Canada if I were you. Reasonably nice ones can be had for less than $2500 on the west coast, and you can find them on the net. Have someone like Chris (posts under "myse") on the BC rx7 forum check the car out for you (for a nominal fee). It will cost you about $250 in fuel to drive it back to Ontario.
Considering what this car you're looking at needs it will cost you considerably more to fix it up than what it's worth, even if the dealer gives it away for free. Let it sit on his lot for another three months (it will), then offer him 300 for it as a parts car.

I would like to stay local because I don't have the time or money to take a week from school and work or to get one shipped. I think i can get this car into pretty good condition with about $800 worth of parts. It also helps having a dad in the tool and die business, that runs an EDM. He can basically cut anything into a piece of steel.

Sorry, but I didn't get any pics today. Too busy with other things.

The hatch will open with a key even without a battery in the car.

****. I guess the only way to open the hatch while looking is with power to the electric popper. Oh well, yet another simple fix and another bargaining chip.

I think theres an emergency release for the gas door if you can get to it.

Yes.

Yes. You have to get the rear hatch to open first...reach in with your hand in between the drivers side taillight area aft the speaker and pop open the fuel filler door with your finger.

If you end up getting that SE and need parts or want a parts car, let me know as I'm either going to sell my car (Black 85 GSL-SE) as is or part it out at the end of this month.

Mine still drives and has some nice parts on it, I'm just loosing the battle to rust and want to save for an 8 over the winter.
