83 Cruise into 85

Would I be able to swap the cruise control setup out of a 83 LE into a 85 GS? Are all the components the same? Did anything change in its location? TIA

I swapped components from an 83 GSL to an 84GS. My 84 had most of the harnesses already in place.

The 83 had a hole in the column and a small tab on the combo switch. The 84 didn't. The master switches are different. 83 is in the center console, 84 is in the dash in front of the ignition switch. I got the switch from an 84. Don't forget the control unit under the driver's side storage box.

Thanks a bunch Ron! So basically, it will work. Are the harnesses compatible between 83 and 85 or do I need to do some soldering?

In regard to "under the hood" - is everything the same there?

Everything was the same under the hood. All connectors plugged in. Only the wiring for the master switches was different.

What do you mean, "the wiring for the master switches was different"?

The master switch in the 83 is located in the center console. The master switch in the 84 is located in the lower part of the dash, directly in front of the ignition switch. The wiring for the switch was already there in the 84. There is a small rectangular cover over the switch hole on cars without cruise. The plug for the master switch was right behind the cover when I removed it. The switches are different, so I had to get one from another 84 to fit the hole and plug. I drove around with jumper wires in the plug until I found the 84 switch.

Okay. Did that connector have a bunch of green wires?

I believe it did. It was the only empty plug behind the cover. I can pull my switch and take a look if you like.

The master cruise switch connector has a red arrow pointing to it in pic #2. The connectors to the right are for the cigarette lighter.
