Back in the days when i had beaters with No air cond, i was wondering if it was possible to get an Air con unit that would sit on a back seat or somewhere, and plug into a Cigarette lighter?
do thses type things exist? if they did, they would sell really well over here in OZ!

I have an '83, blows cold, but will need re-gassing for this coming summer. Here in Australia, it gets bloody hot, even with both windows open. . the A/C is a joy on days like those. . .

you mean with a dead battery?
maybe if when u turned the car off it was already cool inside so the compressor doesnt have to work as hard cause it just has to hold the temp instead of drop it. then maybe you could have solar panels in the sunroof to assist the battery. and you could use a second battery instead of the main one that could be hooked up to the alternator too....dont know how good it would work, just a thought.

Works good. I had to replace the compressor but that was many years ago. It takes a while but it gets freezing in there...

R12 all the way baby!

I used to live in a town in a vally near perth. got 44 degree all the time in summer (thats just over 110 fahrenheit for all You playing this game across the rest of the world) and i didnt turn it on 4 6 years, THEN... the windows decided not to work on a very hot summers day... found out it had never been regassed when dad had it.... Try driving down the highway with both doors held open, Got so pissed of with it the next day i ripped its Tube guts from it and took to it with an axe out of the car. and fixed the windows kinda. Never needed it since. God gave us more wind the faster we go.

Mine barely works.

BTW, someone asked about an AC in the back. A guy I know, who is a detective (he basically spies on criminals all day) built an awesome system. What it is is a rather large ice chest, filled with ice, with a small ac blower thing on top of it. He drilled a few holes into the top of the ice chest, and he ran some tubes into the ice chest and connected it to the back of the ice chest. He powers it with an extra battery, and it blows ice cold air at about 20 mph. It is absolutely the greatest thing ever!

Mine works wonders, but as with some guys already said, I hardly use it. Unless it's like a 37c+ day, coz it drains my power away otherwise!

But it's interesting to note, all other cars I've been in with ac and heating, people always say how well the rx7 is for cooling and heating...better than new, modern cars.

Car AC systems are very powerful compared to home and industrial units because in a car nobody is willing to wait for the cooling effect. If you turn your home unit on do you expect cold right then, no. But in your car you do so they make them very powerful for that very reason. The a/c compressor uses a magnetic clutch to engage, so when it's not engaged it just freewheels, meaning that taking it off will gain you no extra power, although it will save weight.
